Truly Full Coverage Foundation: Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint

There’s been a lot of buzz lately about two new foundations, one from Fenty and the other from Huda Beauty. Fenty doesn’t seem to have a good color match for me, and I’m not sure the formula is right for my dry skin anyway. Plus the shades that might be close to my skin tone are always out of stock at my local Sephora, and they take away the testers. Huda’s foundation is not carried at my Sephora, and I will not buy a foundation without color matching in person.

I was chatting with a very nice SA who works in the fragrance department at Sephora who I met a year ago about what I was shopping for during the VIB event. She asked if I had tried the Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint from Hourglass. I wasn’t aware of it.

Last year, I was shopping for the Hourglass Stick Foundation, but they didn’t have a good color for me. I was amazed that the shade Vanilla in the Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint foundation was perfect for me.

Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint comes in a handy flat tube that’s great for travel. The foundation itself is a thick but fluffy, whipped cream. A little goes a long way. I’ve applied it with either a blending sponge or an angled kabuki brush, and I’ve had good results with both.

What amazes me about this foundation is that it feels absolutely lightweight on my skin, but it provides full coverage! In fact, this is the first foundation I’ve found among all the full coverage foundations I’ve tried that actually covers my sun damage without me needing to apply concealer. I’m impressed.

The foundation is a great choice for those of us with mature skin. Here’s how Hourglass describes it:

“This superior foundation employs advanced technology to promote the appearance of a smoother, firmer and more youthful complexion. Fortified with Hourglass’ Hyaluronan Complex, Illusion® plumps fine lines and wrinkles, tightens the appearance of sagging skin, and delivers an unbelievably luminous glow. UVA/UVB SPF 15 helps protect skin from the sun.”

I really haven’t noticed the “luminous glow” that is supposed to result from “pearlescent pigments” on my face, but I have primers and bases that can do that if I want it. However, you can definitely see the glow in this lightly but not completely blended swatch.

I would say the finish is neutral: somewhere between matte and dewy. It’s very comfortable to wear, and it wears well, though I do wear it over primer. I believe that the hyaluronic acid in the formula is a real plus for me with my very dry skin.

The tube contains 1.0 oz/30 ml, but unfortunately, it’s priced at $56! Yikes. To be honest, I didn’t look at the price (probably the first time in history that I haven’t). Because of the 20% off sale and the SA who was helping me, I just went with it. So, this tube better last me till the next VIB sale!

The foundation comes in 12 shades from fair/light to medium/deep. My shade, Vanilla, is the lightest shade with cool undertones, though it looks pinkish to me. Shell, the next light shade, has neutral undertones, thought it looked more yellow to me.

So it you have dry skin or mature skin, I definitely think it’s worthwhile to take a look at Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint and ask for a sample to try. It’s available on the Hourglass website, at Sephora, Bergdorf’s, Nordstrom, and other fine retailers.

  1. Having recently realised how much I enjoy Guerlain Lingerie de Peau ($63.00!) I feel your pain. I might try this one next time so I can feel some “savings” LOL!

    1. I still have never tried any makeup from Guerlain, Rach, and I know I’m missing out. Just the name alone, Lingerie de Peau, is a tease! Yes, this Hourglass foundation would be a step down from where you are now, lol. But I love the hydration and it’s the first foundation I’ve come across where I don’t have to run for the concealer. Yay!

  2. I had no idea that this is actually a full coverage foundation, I’ve thought it would be sheer due to the word tint.

    1. You’re right, Shireen, I wouldn’t have tried it because of the name “Skin Tint” if the SA hadn’t recommended it to me. I should add that in to my post. Thanks!

  3. I love the Hourglass Vanish Stick foundation. I need to get my hands on an ingredients list for this stuff and see if it’s something I’d like to try.

    1. Erika, I just went to the Hourglass, Sephora and Bluemercury websites, and no one lists the ingredients. How weird! I’ll have to see if I can get them from the box it came in. For some reason, I was able to find a great color match in this foundation but not in the stick. The formula of this foundation is just fantastic for me. Worth trying a sample when you go to Sepora next time.

  4. I like the flat tubes like that for travel too. And, I too am curious about ingredients!

    1. Definitely a travel-friendly tube. I think it’s odd that the full ingredient list isn’t on their or Sephora’s website. Hmmm.

  5. Wow, that is a heavy price point for foundation. Although, with aging dry skin on my cheeks, maybe this is something I need to look into.

    1. Kristi, if you find yourself at Sephora or Nordstrom, definitely ask for a sample of the Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint. I don’t think of you as “aging” yet, but if you have dry skin you might really loved this whipped souffle foundation.

  6. My combo-oily pregnant skin might hate this right now but it sounds like a great pick for you and for dry skin!!! I’ll have to revisit when my hormones are back in line.

    1. The Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint may not be for you, Judy, since you usually don’t need more hydration. But it sure does work well for me with my super dry skin 🙂

  7. My wallet sheds a tear every time I fall in love with a pricey product, but I feel like there are some categories where it makes more sense to splurge. My splurges include mostly face products where crappy texture/formulation will be hard to hide. That includes foundations, concealers, blushes, bronzers, setting powder, and highlighters.
Anastasia recently posted…Sky Organics Bubble Box December 2017 ReviewMy Profile

    1. I agree, Anastasia! Worth it for foundation, concealer, and anything shimmery. Going to try this when my It foundation is gone (and there’s another sale, LOL!).

      1. Kim, next time you’re in Sephora, ask for a sample. Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint is great for winter dry skin, yet it feels so lightweight 🙂

    2. My list of pricey products is a little narrower than yours, lol, but I definitely agree with you in principle 😉 But I definitely agree that a foundation that’s the right formulation and shade really makes sense to splurge.

  8. Sounds amazing, I’m going to get a sample!

  9. I wish I’d read this before I placed my Sephora order today. Now I don’t have $25 off on it. I didn’t like the stick foundation but this sounds a whole lot better.

    1. Marcia, the Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint is really worth asking for a sample next time you go to Sephora or Nordstrom just so you know if it would work for you next time. I didn’t like the Hourglass Stick, and they didn’t have a match for me either. But this one is a whole different story for me.

  10. I’m curious because I often find full coverage foundation to be drying and cakey.

    1. Though this foundation would probably be better for your mom because it’s so hydrating and good for older skin, you would find this to be almost an oxymoron: lightweight “skin tint” that provides full coverage. Go figure

    I’m interested!

    1. Anne, if you have a Sephora near you, go in and ask for a sample of the Hourglass Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint to try at home. Using it for a couple of days was what convinced me! LMK if you do it 🙂

      1. Anne C says:

I will! Hoping I get great results too! ❤️

        1. I hope it works for you too, Anne! And I hope they have a good color match for your skin tone. Keep me posted 🙂

  12. Wow I’m surprised that you can get so much coverage from that, the name is really underselling its performance!

    1. It’s true – the Hourglass Stick Foundation really created a buzz when it came out. Illusion Hyaluronic Skin Tint must be flying under the radar, but it’s a really good option for dry skin or for older skin.

  16. Great with a really good coverage.
Helena recently posted…Winter Nail Art Challenge: Red and GreenMy Profile

  17. I love Hourglass, and have used their products for many years, and yet I have never tried this. It was on my radar, but I tend to gravitate toward light coverage foundations and tinted moisturizers, but this looks really lovely on your skin, and now I am very curious to try it!

    1. You may not need this foundation, Helen. It’s great for me because of the hyaluronic acid and the fact that it helps with fine lines and wrinkles too. It’s very lightweight and though it covers so well, it still feels like a “skin tint”!
