Trying Out DHC Silky Cotton Pads

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

When I bought another tube of Glo Skin Beauty HD Mineral Foundation Stick in a shade that suits me now, I needed another couple of purchases to qualify for free shipping at Dermstore.com. I bought a can of Coola Body Classic Organic Fragrance-free Sunscreen Spray SPF 50, and I decided to try DHC Silky Cotton. Everything was 20% off around Memorial Weekend, so the cotton pads were $4.80, worth trying.

My Favorite Cotton Pads

If you follow NSDB, you know that Koh Gen Do Pure Cotton Pads are my favorites. They’re “certified organic”, they’re big enough to remove an entire face of makeup, and they are very soft.

They switched from packaging in a cardboard box to a resealable clear plastic pouch. Although less environmentally-friendly, the plastic pouch keeps the pads cleaner because the cardboard box never closed well once it was opened.

The new plastic resealable package holds 80 cotton pads (instead of the old 60), and the price is $23, definitely pricey. But I wait for sales (right now, KGD Pure Cotton Pads are on sale for $19.55 at Macy’s with code FRIEND plus 10% cash back at Rakuten), and I splurge on KGD, usually at Lovelyskin.com because of the free shipping. Not long ago, Marcia very generously treated me to a bag!

DHC Silky Cotton

As I mentioned above, $4.80 was worth spending to try DHC’s cotton pads. Like KGD of old, 80 cotton pads come in a cardboard box. But the regular price is a much more affordable $6 instead of $23. Good start.

The box describes the product as:

“A delicate silk blend wrapped around layers of 100% natural cotton.”

I’m good with 100% natural cotton. It doesn’t have to be organic.

The cardboard box actually has a useful opening that can be easily re-closed. Inside, the cotton pads are lined up like little soldiers. It looks very efficient.

Silky Cotton pads look very different from others I have tried. The layers are held together with perforations that form a seam at the two ends. Odd. That decreases the usable size of the pad. Though the pad measures 2″ x almost 3″, the usable area is 2″ x 2 1/4″. It is a much smaller pad than the Koh Gen Do Pure Cotton Pad that’s 2.4″ x 3.2″, all usable area.

What’s really unusual about the DHC Silky Cotton is on the flip side. It has a little pocket for you to insert two fingers to hold the pad. Really odd. I use it that way, but it really isn’t necessary.

The DHC Silky Cotton is really soft. The silky blend over 100% natural cotton is a nice mix. It’s pleasant to use. The pad is strong as well as soft, so it doesn’t disintegrate during use.

I just used a Silky Cotton pad with micellar water to clean the dirt and pollen off my very dirty face and neck after working on my lawn for 7 hours. That pad was green with pollen. Gross! But it cleaned well.

When I use Silky Cotton to remove a full face of makeup, I sometimes need to use two. I like to use a clean area to remove each eye’s makeup, my face makeup, and my lipstick. So two of these pads (versus one from Koh Gen Do) are often necessary to do that job.

One reviewer on the website said that she found DHC Silky Cotton to be thick enough to be able to use both sides. I never considered using the side with the finger pouch. But maybe I’ll give it a go!

DHC Silky Cotton are sold at Ulta, Dermstore.com, Lookfantastic US, Skinstore.com, and on the DHC website where they inexplicably cost $1 more, $7 a box.

Final Thoughts

I’m glad I bought the DHC Silky Cotton to try out. I don’t love the pads quite as much as Koh Gen Do primarily because of the smaller size of the DHC pads. Nevertheless, they work well, and they are unusual. They’re very good quality.

If I needed to save money, I would have no hesitation in repurchasing DHC Silky Cotton because they are a quality product at an excellent price. But I think KGD Pure Cotton still has the edge for me because of the larger size.

  1. These sound very good. Koh Gen Do definitely makes my all-time favorite cotton pads! I have recently switched to the reusable (and washable) cotton rounds, and so far I am happy enough that I haven’t purchased cotton balls or pads!
