Tula Probiotics & Superfoods Protect & Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel SPF 30

Tula Skincare is a brand that has been popping up often these days. Here’s a little background on Tula for those of you who, like me, may not be familiar with it.

Tula means “balance” in Sanskrit, and TULA Probiotic Skincare was founded by Dr. Roshini Raj, a gastroenterologist, author and women’s health expert. Dr. Raj developed a patented technology for the skin based on research about the probiotics, bacteria and yeasts that keep us healthy. TULA’s approach to formulation is simple: rigorous research and clinical studies determine which ingredients go into its serums, moisturizers, cleansers and more.

A friend mentioned trying a lightweight sunscreen from the cruelty-free brand, Tula Skincare, so I decided to pick up a tube during Ulta’s holiday sale.

Tula Probiotics & Superfoods Protect & Glow Daily Sunscreen Gel SPF 30 is positioned as “skincare” rather than solely as sunscreen. Importantly, Tula Probiotics & Superfoods is a reef-safe sunscreen that also protects against environmental stressors and bluelight from digital devices. Yes!

The probiotics in the formula help lock in moisture and strengthen the skin barrier, while pineapple and papaya help promote even skin tone. In fact, it is described as having a pineapple scent that I was looking forward to. But to me, it has a sweet, chemical-ish scent (though it is free of synthetic fragrance) that doesn’t smell like pineapple. Nevertheless, the scent is gone in a flash.

“Wild Butterfly” Ginger Root protects against blue light.

The sunscreen has a very lightweight, pale yellow, gel-cream consistency that sometimes makes me feel like I need to use an extra moisturizer for my winter dry skin, but that may just be me.

The formula is also greaseless once it sinks in. But the strange thing about it is it can leave the skin with more than just the “glow” that Tula mentions in the product description. To me, it makes my skin look too shiny all over, especially now when I’m not wearing foundation to tone it down. The friend who turned me on to it wears setting powder over it, and that does the trick for her. I think that Tula was trying to turn a liability into a benefit when it called the product Protect & Glow. I think that the glow is a side effect of one of the ingredients.

The “glow” under my eyes, on my cheeks and nose is a bit more than I like. After a while, however, it does go away.

Tula Protect & Glow doesn’t clog pores, and it is fine for all skin types.

It protects against UVA and UVB rays. It goes on completely clear and doesn’t leave a white cast because it is made with chemical sunscreen ingredients.

Tula Protect & Glow is vegan, cruelty-free, and free of phthalates, sulfates, mineral oil, petroleum products, parabens, and dairy. It is NOT gluten-free. The tube contains 1.7 fl. oz. and is priced at $36. It’s available on the Tula Skincare website, at Ulta, Neiman Marcus, and Nordstrom

So, I am somewhat on the fence about this lightweight sunscreen. I love the lightweight, greaseless consistency, and the fact that it provides blue light protection as well as sun protection. I just wish the glow wasn’t so glowing!

Good Morning Allison, hope you are staying safe in this blizzard that is ravaging the east coast. I have never tried any of the Tula products. I will have to research the brand. I desperately need something to lighten my dark spots and am open to anyone’s suggestions!

    1. Sandy, the Nor’easter is supposed to get here between 1-3pm this afternoon. I am hoping that I’m close enough to the coast to not get too much snow, but because I live at the top of a hill, I usually get clobbered 🙁 This was my first try with Tula, and though I am not crazy about the shininess of this product, I will try some more products eventually. About lightening dark spots, I think I am in the same boat. All the brightening products I have tried over the years have been effective at fading my cute freckles, but they haven’t done a lot to get rid of my serious dark spots from years of sun damage. Some day, after the pandemic is over, I may save up my pennies and try IPL or another laser treatment. I have spoken to one of my blogger friends, Kathryne (the Fabzilla who now blogs about vegan lifestyle), who is an aesthetic nurse in Hawaii, and she told me that I needed laser treatments. That said, if you do find something that works, please let me know!

  2. I have a bunch of their products, but haven’t tried their sunscreen yet. I do tend to prefer mineral sunscreens to chemical, but I really like Tula.

    1. I’ll be curious to hear what you think of the Tula products. I would like to try more of the skincare products at some point. All things being equal, I would prefer a mineral sunscreen, but the siren song of lightweight sunscreens that tend to be chemical sunscreens always gets me to try them.

  3. I don’t think this is for me. I don’t love that shiny look since I was so oily for so long and this reminds me of that. It would be okay for being in the house with sunlight shining in, but not for going out.

    1. I don’t love that “glow” either. It does go away after a while, but it takes too long to go. I will try it sometime with foundation and see if it’s better. But that aspect of the Tula sunscreen is a real disappointment

      1. Gabrielle says:

Dusting a little setting powder over it takes care of the shine. At least for me.

        1. I mentioned your tip in the review for those who can wear powder. It’s a good idea!

          1. Gabrielle says:

Thank you! Golly! How did I miss that when I first read it???

          2. No worries, Gabrielle! It was a pretty long post. I haven’t tried your tip yet, but I should. I don’t know if I gave away all my setting powder because my skin is so dry I can’t really use it. I know I have a tiny pressed powder compact that I bought from Estee Lauder years ago that I could probably try if the powder is still good.

Speaking of Tula, and since I vowed to update you on Choice Day, I got to chose a Tula eye balm for my Ipsy Glam Bag X! I also got the blush and not the eyebrow wax (Yay!!!! And it’s PINK! Bigger YAY!!!), the 18 shade Huda Beauty rose gold remastered eyeshadow palette, a pretty mauve lip paint, a facial massager, the Pat McGrath mascara, a serum that sounds pretty darn good, and a Beauty Blender. So all in all, it seems like it was worth it. We’ll see now if the stuff arrives unbroken, huh?

    1. Your X bag definitely sounds worth it! Is the Tula eye balm one of the sticks? The regular, or the rose or the gold?? You’ll have to let me know what you think of that balm. Which blush are you referring to? Glad it’s pink! I’m curious about the PM mascara, the serum, and is the facial massager a roller or a battery-operated one? I was so impressed with this, I went to the website to see about signing up. Of course, February is filled, so the next one is May. I’m kinda confused: can you cancel your Plus Bag and just get the 4 X bags? Or can you only buy one X bag to check it out? I’m not overjoyed by my coming February bag. In two of the choice categories, there was literally nothing I wanted, though in the first choice I picked Dr Brandt Hydra-Biotic Sleeping Mask and that sounds interesting. I did do a couple of add-ons: full size Payot Hydra 24 Creme Glace and travel size Lab Filorga Hydra-Filler Moisturizer: two brands I was curious about. Hopefully, I’ll feel better about it when it arrives. Since you are getting the X bag in Feb., you skip the Plus, right?

  5. Gabrielle says:

The Tula eye balm is the rose one. I got the Patrick Ta blush. The facial massager says it’s sonic, so… The serum is from Private Doctor and the lip paint is from that new Halsey line About-face. You have to be subscribed to either Glam Bag or Glam Bag Plus to get the X bags, at least for now, but the X bag does take the place of your regular bag in the months when it’s available. I’m glad you at least got some good add-ons. I actually like the Dr. Brandt sleeping mask so I hope you like it too.

    1. Oh, I’m glad you’re getting the rose one. So eager to hear what you think about it. The face massager sounds fabulous. I am on the hunt for a discount somewhere on the FOREO IRIS Massager, but for now, I’m coming empty…so face massagers are on my mind. I forgot this is the Patrick Ta bag, so of course, that’s the blush. I will take a look at it. I don’t know Private Doctor, though maybe I saw something from that brand on line today, maybe on Ipsy, lol. And I need to check out About Face. Glad you’ve enjoyed the Dr. B sleeping mask – that makes me feel like at least I chose one good thing!

      1. Gabrielle says:

What did they pick for you, btw? I’m curious. I will let you know how the facial roller works out! I really hope you like the Dr. Brandt mask.

        1. They chose Maelle Blush palette – looks pretty but I’m drowning in blush and I don’t wear it much these days, and Ahava Night Replenisher for Normal to Dry Skin. I’m not jumping for joy for either of them. The other two things I chose out of desperation were a Violet Voss sparkly sheer gloss – not exactly my style of gloss, and something called Dew Balm from Tynt Beauty that I can’t imagine I would want.

          1. Gabrielle says:

Ahava makes the most amazing masks, so hopefully the Night Replenisher is just as good and you’ll wind up adoring it. I have my fingers crossed. Maybe you could do a giveaway with the gloss?

          2. I don’t think I have tried any of the Ahava masks, but I have gotten at least one moisturizer from Ahava and it was meh. Hopefully, I’ll be surprised with the quality. At any rate, I’ll be getting two other moisturizers with the Add-ons, lol, plus the sleeping mask! I will take a look at the gloss tube when it arrives and maybe put it together with something else and do a giveaway as you suggested. I still don’t trust the USPS yet to actually deliver things on time, so I have been holding off on giveaways.

        2. Oh my, I want the Patrick Ta Double Take cream and powder blush in She’s That Girl (not that I need it), but it looks beautiful and I love the idea of cream and powder

          1. Gabrielle says:

I am getting the Monochrome Moment Velvet Blush in She’s Passionate. It does say it has a buttery, cream-like feel. If it’s as perfect for me as Jane Iredale cream blush in Clarity, I’ll be thrilled.

          2. Oh, I see why you’re excited – it’s gorgeous. I love the shade. On my desktop, the color reminds me of NARS Orgasm but without the gold. So lovely and it makes me want spring to arrive even more. next I’ll look at the Iredale cream blush. I am a cream fan so gotta look.

          3. Gabrielle says:

The Jane Iredale is the exact same color as my natural flush, so you can see why I adore it.

          4. Ah, it’s a cream stick! On my screen, Clarity is a light candy pink, so pretty! I wish that were my natural flush!

          5. Gabrielle says:

I discovered the Jane Iredale blush when Allure used to have their summer month of giveaways and I won it.I’ve been hooked ever since.

          6. Wow, it really must be a keeper! I need to try more Iredale products. Because neither Sephora nor Ulta carries it, I haven’t tried very much and Ipsy doesn’t sample it, boo hoo.

    2. Also, bummer that you have to subscribe to either Glam Bag or Plus to qualify for X. X 4 times a year would be plenty of stuff for me. X 4 times/year plus Plus is way too much.

      1. Gabrielle says:

Well, you don’t get Plus the months you get X, but yes, I do see your point. I do wish I could just subscribe to X as well.

  6. Always looking forward to sunscreen reviews! I love experimenting with different formulas.

    1. I am the same way. I must have a million sunscreens. Although this one isn’t perfect, I’m still glad I tried Tula
