Wallaroo Hat Co. “Bali”

I’m a hat person. I have a million hats for all seasons. I just love hats!

But besides loving hats, I’m a devotee because I spend a lot of time outdoors, so:

  • I’m trying to protect my hair color from fading
  • I’m trying to protect my skin from UV rays.

In the summer, I’m always on the hunt for a hat with UV protection. Though I already have several that I wear to the beach, I really wanted to find a very lightweight hat to shield me fro the sun but that would also keep me cool. My biggest complaint about the hats I already own is that they are hot, too hot to wear especially to the beach.

Wallaroo Sun Protection Hats

Though I can’t remember how exactly, toward the end of last summer, I heard about Wallaroo hats. Perhaps I saw some Wallaroo hats in a store, but somehow I decided to buy a Wallaroo hat online.

Wallaroo’s hats have a Seal of Recommendation from the Skin Cancer Foundation. To earn the Seal of Recommendation, a manufacturer must provide scientific data showing that its product sufficiently and safely, “aids in the prevention of sun-induced damage to the skin.” The data is reviewed by a volunteer committee of photo-biologists — experts in the study of the interaction between UV radiation and the skin. The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends the material of every Wallaroo, and its sister brand Carkella, hat with a UPF rating (UPF measures the amount of UV radiation that penetrates a fabric and reaches the skin. UPF is a rating for clothing and fabric.) and a 3+ inch brim as an effective UV protectant. Wallaroo’s sun protection hats have a UPF of either 30+ or 50+.

Wallaroo “Bali” Hat

So I decided to go for a Wallaroo Hat with a wide protective brim. I chose the “Bali” hat with a UPF rating of 30+ and a 4 inch brim.

Last summer was so hectic that I don’t remember wearing the hat! I put it away, somewhere, and I recently found it. Boy, am I glad I did!

The Bali is such a comfortable, lightweight and cool hat. I looked at the fabric tag, and it says that the Bali is constructed with 90% paper and 10% PP Braid. It’s breathable, meaning that air flows through it, and it feels air-conditioned!

Though the hat isn’t washable, it can be spot cleaned.

Although Wallaroo makes “petite” as well as regular/medium hats in different styles, I chose a medium that has a head circumference of 58 centimeters. Nevertheless, inside the crown of the hat is an adjustable drawstring that makes the fit perfect for me.

Also, I was very happy to find that it is a packable hat that folds. Since we’re going to visit Jeff’s daughters in North Carolina very soon, I am glad I can take my sun protective hat!

The Bali sun protection hat is priced at $53.

If you’re looking for a new, lightweight hat for sun protection, look at Wallaroos!

Your hat looks fabulous on you! Thank you for the recommendation. I need a hat for gardening, I may look into this one.

    1. Thank you, Denise! I appreciate it, especially since my neck still looks awful since my surgery. But what impresses me about this hat is how lightweight it is. It’s truly is almost like it breathes. I guess it’s the fact that it’s made from paper, though it doesn’t feel like it. Several years ago, I bought a gardening hat at a local, respected nursery. Unfortunately, I didn’t see that the size was XS and it never fit me. Plus the “straw” or whatever it was made from was tightly woven and so hot. I ended up giving it away to someone in the Buy Nothing group 😉

  2. I love that smile! This hat fits you so well. Love that it’s made mostly of paper.

    1. Thank you, Michelle!

  3. What a stunning hat on you, Allison! I also love your sun glasses! What a perfect day at the beach you appear to be having in that photo!
