What’s In My Beach Bag: Sun Protection

My broken record about the unending cool weather sounds like it’s coming to an end this weekend. Saturday: mid 80s, Sunday: 90. Beach weather!

So I put together the sun protection items that I will wear and put in my beach bag.

Body

  • This is a place holder for a sunscreen product that I want to buy but don’t yet own: Hint Pineapple Sunscreen Spray SPF 30. I’ve heard such great things about it, and it is supposed to smell absolutely luscious! I need it to re-apply sunscreen while at the beach because a spray is so much easier for reapplying at the beach than a lotion. The price is between $14.99 at Target and Amazon to $17.99 on the Hint website. Right now, the pineapple scent is sold out on Amazon, boo hoo. It also comes in Red Grapefruit and Pear.

  • Supergoop Forever Young Hand Cream with Sea Buckthorn SPF 40: I wish I had thought to wear sunscreen on my hands over the past few decades. I probably could have avoided a lot of the brown spots on the backs of my hands. I never realized there were hand creams with SPF (I don’t think there were, years ago), and it didn’t occur to me to put sunscreen on my hands. Now I know better. Supergoop Hand Cream with Sea Buckthorn SPF 40 makes it so easy and so pleasant to protect my hands and also make them feel and look better at the same time. The white cream goes on completely colorless and it is completely greaseless. It also hydrates my hands and makes them look plumper. This product is a must for the summer!
  • Hydrochic 3/4 Sleeve Top: I got this top last year (original Hydrochic review here), and I find myself wearing it when I’m outdoors biking or doing other outdoor activities. For the beach, it’s great to put on when there’s a chilly sea breeze.

Face

  • I often wear a foundation-type product to the beach. Because I like to cover the dark spots that I already have and try to prevent more sun damage, I often reach for foundation from IT Cosmetics because they have SPF 50. I own both the CC Cream and Bye Bye Foundation, and I will probably wear one or the other. I was rather critical of Bye Bye Foundation when I first purchased and reviewed it (here) a few months ago (though the new Fair Light shade is a perfect match for me). But since then I have been playing around with it, and I have found ways to wear it that have made me change my mind about it. I complained that I found Bye Bye Foundation to be too greasy, but I think I was wrong. It was/is too greasy when I wear it on top of my favorite primer, IT Cosmetics No. 50 Serum Primer. If I don’t wear that primer or other primers that can be heavy-ish like Hourglass No. 28 Primer Serum or even Veil Mineral Primer, or if I wear no primer at all, Bye Bye Foundation is amazingly lightweight. Same thing with IT CC Cream. So I will be wearing either of these two foundations but without primer.

  • On days when I don’t feel like wearing foundation, I have two lightweight sunscreens that I like a lot. I recently reviewed MyChelle Sun Shield Liquid SPF 50 here. I have the non-tinted version, but they have tinted ones too. It comes out of the pump as a white cream, but this titanium-dioxide sunscreen doesn’t leave behind a white cast. I also like Korean skincare brand, Country & Stream Honey UV Water Gel SPF 50 that I discovered last summer (reviewed here). It too is a white lotion that disappears into my skin. Both are great choices IMO.

  • Because I have sensitive eyes, I don’t like to apply regular sunscreen to my eye area. I’ve got Supergoop Advanced Anti-aging Eye Cream SPF 37. It has a cooling metal applicator, though sometimes I apply it with my finger for more control. I also apply it lightly on my eyelid and above the crease because I have a couple of dark spots above my crease from sun exposure. Like the Supergoop Hand Cream, the white cream completely disappears into my skin, and it isn’t greasy.
  • Revlon Kiss Balm, Sweet Cherry, Lip Balm SPF 20: Because the Revlon is a sheer wash of color, Sweet Cherry looks like an MLBB color. It gives my lips enough natural-looking color that’s fine for the beach or any casual activity. And it feels good on my lips.

I also wear my signature Ray-Ban red and faux tortoise shell Wayfarer sunnies and a hat to try to protect my hair color from fading (impossible). Sometimes I’ll wear my Bass Rocks Beach Club baseball style hat or a beach hat (straw or fabric) with a brim to keep sun off of my face and more of my hair. Check out my new huge beach hat that I got at the sale at the Peabody Essex Museum store. It’s gigantic!

  1. I do love IT Cosmetics CC Cream but I wish they would launch more shades. It’s a brilliant brand and products but they are really lacking in the shade department.

    1. Yes, they definitely are. I was lucky when they launched Bye Bye Foundation, I finally got the perfect color match for me with the new Fair Light shade. I heard they are working on a new foundation line with about 40 shades. Not sure that they’ll ever add to the CC cream shades though.

  2. What a nice assortment of beach bag picks! That Country & Stream Honey UV Water Gel SPF 50 sounds really fantastic! I need to track it down!

All I can say it this was the BEST read this morning. ☕️☕️👀 I really like:
    A253491
IT Cosmetics Super-Size Full Coverage Physical SPF 50 CC Cream $61.50 from QVC in Medium from QVC. I really had to work with it before I found that I liked it. You don’t have to use your face serums, moisturizers before since the foundation has all that in it.(I use them but really sparingly.) I use Tarte primer before. I love It Cosmetics primer but found that I really get greasy with it. (I’m a dry, oily t-zone.) I use Tarte primer in the jar. It works really nice. I found using the Beauty Blender Sponge works really well. I dab the foundation on my face all over with my fingers, then blending with the sponge. I then set it with a nice light dusting of setting powder. Hope this helps. I also use a setting spray after all my make-up is on. Saves everything during the heat. Love the Revlon Lip Color Balms. I have all the colors. Recommend them! I used to buy the Goop Hand Cream, I now buy my favorite hand lotion and my favorite sunscreen and mix the two (equal parts) and put them in a pump container. You save so much money doing this. I put some in a little squeeze bottle for my purse. Now I have sun protection on my hands after I wash them. Never have to worry. Get your sunscreen at any Dollar Store. I need to try the brush on SPF powder. Thanks Allison ❤️ Have a nice weekend. 💐🍷

    1. DiEtta, thank you! And what a wonderful tip about making your own hand cream with sunscreen! I need to do that when I finish up my Supergoop 🙂 Have a great weekend!

Allison, great review! I use many of the same products including the IT CC cream and IT Foundation moisturizer. I have been mixing light and medium together for the IT products. I use no primer when I use them.i also am using a new to me facial sunscreen. It is LaRoche-Posey ultra light with a SPF 60. I use that on top of my moisturizer so not adding primer for summer. I also have the Colorscience brush on powder with SPF 50 and Colorscience Total Eye with SPF 35…I was lucky enough to win both of these. I also have Vita Libertarian Phenomenal sunless tanning mousse that I received in last month’s Allure box..have not used it yet. I have a couple of hats and also use Skinfix lip repair balm in minty mint wit 40% coconut oil. Adding that Hint spray to my Target list too. My beach bag is one that I got about 15 years ago in Aruba. And those shirts are awesome. Kim got those shirts for her kids when they were little and we were in Charleston. Oh, also got my sister Supergoop brush on sunscreen foundation for about half the price of Colorscience. She loves it as she is also a redhead and they are out on the big lakes so much in the summer. Sorry for the long reply but sun products are so very important.

        1. Hi Sandy, thanks for weighing in! I don’t know why it took me so long to figure out that I should ditch the primer with the IT foundations. It makes a huge difference. Thank you for the tip of Supergoop’s Brush-On being half the price of the Colorescience. I love Supergoop products too, so why not save money and get another great brand. I haven’t tried anything yet from Skinfix. Because I can’t do mint on my lips, I’ll have to try one of their other products. I wish I had had time today to stop at Target and see if they have Hint Pineapple Spray. I’m dying to smell it. Hope you have a sunny weekend where you are!

  4. I keep seeing Hint and I think I need it!

  5. Lots of great picks here, but I’m all for pineapple sunscreen! My Target store selection is pretty bad so I doubt I’ll find it there, but you know I’m tracking that baby down!

    1. Me too, Jen! I neeeeeeeeed it!

  6. The Honey UV Water Gel is my HG for face SPF. It never breaks me out, sinks in super-fast, and never pills. Plus, it photographs well. I want it for life!

    1. I tracked it down because you reviewed either this one or another Country & Stream that was very similar 🙂

  7. You know I like the IT CCcreams, I just got some new goodies from SuperGoop I’m trying out.

  8. I’ve tried Super Goop and really loved it. I want to try a MyChelle, I’ve seen it mentioned a few times recently.

  9. I’ve gone without foundation two days this week and the MyChelle came in so handy. My granddaughter and I used the body one yesterday at the splash pad and I also used the face one. Then today I used the tinted version so I wouldn’t look deathly.
I bought the new IT foundation from QVC in that last TSV but they were out of Fair Light so I stuck with Fair. I haven’t used primer under it so it’s worked well for me.

    1. I’m glad that MyChelle is coming in handy for you and your family! I’m so glad that the lightbulb went on for me finally that wearing the IT No. 50 Serum Primer underneath Bye Bye Foundation was my problem! Fair Light is a perfect match for me, but I believe you are fairer than I am so maybe the shade is your shade?

  10. With my heat-sensitivity, I bet I would love that Water Gel! Anything light works best for me!

  11. It Cosmetics cc+ is my favorite to reach for when I really want that sun protection!

  12. 25 Sweetpeas says:

Is this Hint sunscreen the same as the brand Hint that has water? The branding looks so alike!

  13. Ehmkay nails says:

So much sun damage from being a silly teenager and now I’m always prepared!

  14. You have some great products in your lineup! I’m trying to find a sunhat I’ll actually wear.

  15. Leslie says:

Growing up in the southwest/desert has made me super diligent about sunscreen and skin care products. I just recently heard of MyChelle and I think I need to give them a try.

    1. MyChelle is such a good natural brand. In addition to sunscreens, they make fab skincare products. Worth checking out!

  16. I absolutely need to get some sunglasses. I feel like I’ve aged really well by staying out of the sun but my current job requires some day driving and I feel myself squinting!

  17. These are amazing cosmetics you are offering. Just love it and am sure the people who love beauty will love these products. Keep it up future is yours!

    1. Thanks!
