What’s Working Now For My Lashes

Over time, the skincare and makeup products that I favor change. No surprise, since I try out so many. But for the past 6 months or more, I’ve been sticking with the same ones for my eyelashes.

Lash Growth Serum

I started using Scorolash in February 2024 (reviewed here) after I started reading more the form of prostaglandin that has been found to be dangerous for pregnant women and may leave discoloration or dark spots on the eye in GrandeLash, RapidLash and other brands. I had been using GrandeLash within the past 12 months and RapidLash for several years before that, and I became concerned about possible eye discoloration or dark spots.

First, my sensitive eyes have had no irritation or problems using Scorolash serum.

After 6 months of using Scorolash about 5 nights a week or sometimes during the day, I am very satisfied with the results I have seen on my own lashes. Although they looked pretty long after using GrandeLash for a few months and RapidLash before that, my lashes have grown even longer.

Nevertheless, I wish the color would return completely to my naked lashes, but I am satisfied that my longest lashes in the middle of each eye look like they have a bit more color than the clear inner and outer lashes. I’ll be curious to see if the color returns to my lashes more completely with more usage.

The brand benefits include:

  • Up to 95% longer and 90% more volume
  • Natural ingredients
  • Cruelty-free, paraben-free, and vegan
  • Easy application – less than 5 seconds (basically, the same as all other lash growth serums)

Here are the key ingredients described on the Scorolash website:

Cucurbita Pepo Pumpkin Seed Extract

Pumpkin seed extract naturally prevents hair fall, keeping eyelashes looking long and full. It encourages long and beautiful eyelashes by slowing down the natural eyelash growth cycle, giving your eyelashes more time to grow, resulting in gorgeous, silkier and sexier eyelashes you’ll want to show off at every opportunity!

Panax Ginseng Extract

Panax Ginseng, also known as Korean Red Ginseng, is an effective hair thickener, thanks to the natural compound known as ‘ginsenoside’ found in the Ginseng Root. It reinforces eyelash growth from root to tip of each individual eyelash, making it super effective at lengthening sparse eyelashes. At last, thick eyelashes without any mascara or extensions in sight!

Swertia Japonica Extract

Derived from the Swertia plant, this extract is another naturally potent hair growth ingredient. It helps thicken and lengthen lashes by increasing healthy blood flow directly to each individual eyelash root, encouraging maximum growth for those long and luscious eyelashes you dream of.

Acorus Calamus Root Extract

The many health benefits of the Acorus Calamus Root have been known since ancient times. Calamus is often mentioned in the Bible and Egyptian formulations, as a medicinal ointment. Calamus Root is widely known for its ability to strengthen hair follicles and condition the roots.

Serenoa Serrulata Fruit Extract

These are palm tree berry extracts that help to strengthen and thicken lashes while reducing breakage. This extract helps promote follicle development while also reducing inflammation.

Pentapeptide-17

This magical peptide penetrates the eyelashes to stimulate keratin growth, the hair’s natural protein encouraging lashes to grow longer and thicker, with visible results in as little as two weeks. It delivers essential proteins straight to the root of the eyelashes, supporting natural hair growth.

Biotinoyl Tripeptide-1

A three amino acid peptide where the famous tripeptide-1 aka GHK is combined with biotin, the well known supplement for stronger eyelashes. The result of the combination is a powerful peptide helpful for reducing hair loss and for making your eyelashes longer, fuller and stronger.

Myristoyl Pentapeptide-17

A five amino acid peptide attached to the oil soluble fatty acid, myristic acid for better bioavailability. It is known to significantly stimulate keratin; it can convince the cells to produce more keratin, the super important structural protein in eyelashes.

Oligopeptide-10

Promotes new hair growth and inhibits hair depigmentation. It strengthens the hairs, while stimulating lash blood micro circulation. As a result, it revitalizes hair follicles.

Hyaluronic Acid

Essential for preventing brittleness and dryness, which can cause premature lash breakage, Hyaluronic Acid strengthens and conditions eyelashes to keep them long and healthy. It can hold its weight in water, making it an excellent natural conditioner and moisturiser for healthy, nourished eyelashes.

Vitamin E

This is an essential vitamin for healthy skin and hair, Vitamin E nourishes and protects eyelashes from damage caused by overly drying mascaras and rough makeup removal. As a potent antioxidant, it also promotes healthy blood flow to the roots of the eyelashes, ensuring that sparse lashes become thick and healthy. No more spidery lashes…just the thickest, strongest and shiniest lashes you’ve every seen!

Vitamin C

Essential for skin and hair health, Vitamin C is another amazing lash conditioner to help your lashes grow long and strong. Just like the hair on your head, keeping eyelashes conditioned is essential for growing long, fluttery eyelashes. As a potent antioxidant, Vitamin C is also fantastic for keeping eyelashes healthy from root to tip so they have a natural sheen that looks like silk.

Vitamin B7

Vital for healthy hair growth, this vitamin naturally supports keratin, one of the most essential building blocks for gorgeous and fluttery eyelashes. It encourages the eyelash hair to grow luscious and strong, naturally thickening sparse eyelashes.

Vitamin B5

Panthenol, also known as Vitamin B5, helps to grow lashes by preventing brittleness and lash breakage. It smooths and conditions hair, helping shorter eyelashes grow longer by preventing premature breakage and lash fall. If you’ve always had short lashes, this vitamin helps to pave the way to that extra length you’ve been waiting for.

Pentylene Glycol

A multi-functional, silky feeling helper that can do quite many things. It’s a moisturizer and helps to make the serum feel great on your lashes. It works synergistically and helps to improve water resistance.

I like all the natural ingredients especially the ingredients that emphasize hair growth.

BTW, there’s a sale for Scorolash advertised on Facebook to receive 30% off using the code s30. Since my tube is a few months old, I’m going to try that code!

My Mascaras

Yeah, I’ve gone through a lot of mascaras over the decades. In fact, I’m always on the lookout for the ideal mascara.

But I have two mascaras that I reach for most often this year.

Thrive Causemetics Liquid Lash Extensions

I’ve been using Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions for two to three years now. For me, the key benefit is the thin, lengthening formula. It is so amazingly easy to apply, and it dries in a flash. It makes my lashes look ultra-long because it coats and darkens all of my lashes. Wish I were better at taking lash photos! This was me on Tuesday night before I headed out to dinner with friends.

The plastic, conical wand is terrific. It doesn’t accumulate the mascara liquid that could clump on lashes. Yay!

The con for me is that Thrive Liquid Lash Extensions is a tubing mascara. The tubing formula is great for creating length and ease of application. But for me, the negative (that I can certainly live with) is removal. When you remove Thrive Liquid Lash, it comes off relatively easily with micellar water. But the mascara doesn’t all dissolve. Some of it breaks into little clumps/tubes. That bugs me, but otherwise I love the mascara.

Benefit FanFest Mascara

I tried new Benefit FanFest Mascara in the travel size via Ipsy in the spring. Because I’ve been a fan of Benefit’s mascaras for at least a decade (I’ve used them all!), I wanted to try their newest mascara, Benefit Fan Fest Fanning and Volumizing Mascara. I’ve always been trying to recapture the “fan” lash effect that I used to get from the discontinued L’Oreal Voluminous Butterfly Intenza Mascara (reviewed here). Fanning of the lashes makes eyes look more open, and makes my downturned eyes look a little less so.

I’ve tried over and over to get a photo of my lashes, to no avail. Here’s one of Benefit’s photos of their model wearing FanFest:

The wand made of bristles is curved, as you might expect, and relatively easy to use.

The pros are the ease of application. I liked this Benefit mascara enough to buy 3 more travel size FanFests from Ipsy.

Truth be told, I don’t usually choose volumizing mascaras, and FanFest is one of them. Volumizing mascaras tend to be thicker. Not surprisingly, the con is that it thickens a bit more over time, so buying the mini size makes sense. In fact, time for me to add the tube I’ve been using to my September empties because it is too thick to comfortably use, and break open a new tube.

So these are the two mascaras I’m using now. After I use up the tubes of FanFest that I still have left, I may go back to Milk Makeup Mascara instead and give that a try again!
