Aveda Shampure Shampoo, Conditioner and Pure-Fume Mist

This August the weather was so consistently humid that nothing, and I repeat, nothing kept my hair frizz free for more than a day or sometimes only for a few hours. Plus I was jogging in the heat and humidity as well as swimming whenever the water was warm enough. As much as I love summer, it was rather dispiriting to look in the mirror 😉  I just kind of gave up on my hair.

But through much of September, the humidity has disappeared, and I’ve been enjoying trying out new haircare products as well as some others that I put away for the summer.

Ages ago, I received Aveda Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner.

I put the box in with my to be tested stash, and I sort of forgot about them. Plus this summer, I stuck with my tried and true haircare products and even they were given a run for their money. When I was trying to consolidate the products that I am hoping to try soon, I came upon a couple of boxes with Aveda haircare products. I gave Jeff a bottle of Aveda Exfoliating Shampoo, and he has just started using it. I’ll report his thoughts in a couple of weeks. And I decided to start using the Aveda Shampure duo.

First, a word about the Shampure Collection. In addition to the Shampoo and Conditioner, the collection includes Dry Shampoo and Dry Conditioner. I did receive them as well from Aveda, but I do not use dry shampoo and conditioner so I sent them to a friend. There is also Shampure Composition Oil, a calming oil for scalp, hair and body that I haven’t tried yet, but it will go into my rotation shortly. The collection also includes a Hand & Body Wash, Body Lotion and a Soy Wax Candle.

Aveda Shampure Collection is about being calming. I can certainly use that. The feeling of calm comes from the fragrance, an aroma created with 25 pure flower and plant essences including certified organic lavender, petitgrain and ylang ylang. It smells like an herbal/floral mix, and I can definitely pick out notes of lavender and ylang ylang (I don’t know what petitgrain is or what it smells like). The resulting scent really is relaxing, and it is lingering too. I can still smell my own hair (in a good way!) after using the shampoo and conditioner around noon, and now, it’s almost 9pm.

The Shampure Collection also included Pure-Fume Mist in the scent I just described.

I use the mist on my body, on my hair, sometimes on my pillow, or even as a room spray. It is quite delightful! But since I received this package from Aveda some time ago, it appears that Pure-Fume Mist has evolved from being part of the Shampure Collection to having a collection of its own, Pure-Fume Aroma. Pure-Fume has been repackaged into an amber bottle, and the new collection is made up of aromatic body sprays formulated with essential oil blends in 7 different formulas, Chakra 1-7, representing each of the 7 chakras, priced at $30 for 3.4 fl. oz./100 ml. There’s also a men’s chakra spray in a clear glass spray bottle, priced at $68.

The first time I used the Aveda Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner, I put them along the wall in my shower where I could reach them. Although the placement of the words on the two bottles is slightly different, the bottles look very similar, i.e. there is no specific or clearly identifiable color or design to differentiate the two, other than the words shampoo and conditioner on the bottle front. And the pale green letters that are not in a huge font are easy to miss. What stands out most is the name of the collection, Shampure.

So the first time I used them, I didn’t really scrutinize the bottles. I just put them on a ledge in the shower, wet my hair and grabbed the one I thought was the shampoo. I applied a small amount to my scalp, and I was surprised that it didn’t lather at all. Not one bit. So I applied some more. Nothing happened. I thought, oh well, this must be a new non-lathering thing. I rinsed my hair well, and went to grab the conditioner. At that point, I realized I had initially grabbed the conditioner and tried to wash my hair with it. I think that’s called CoWashing, a technique I never got into. The reason I didn’t realize my mistake immediately is that my eye had fallen on the first part of the word “Shampure”, and I just focused on the “Shamp” part of the word and in my mind, I filled in the rest. My bad.

I started again by reaching for the real shampoo bottle. The shampoo is clear rather than creamy like the conditioner, and it lathered up right away. Whew! And it smelled great with the herbal/floral scent I described earlier. I rinsed it out, and it left my hair and scalp feeling very clean without feeling stripped. Aveda Shampure Shampoo contains morikue™ protein, an ingredient that cleanses and fortifies all hair types.

Shampoo ingredients: Ingredients: Aqueous (Water\Aqua\Eau) Extracts\Extraits Aqueux:Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Extract, Aloe Barbadensis Leaf Juice, Rosmarinus Officinalis (Rosemary) Leaf Extract, Ammonium Lauryl Sulfate , Disodium Laureth Sulfosuccinate, Lauramidopropyl Betaine, PEG-6 Cocamide, Dimethicone PEG-7 Isostearate, Babassuamidopropyl Betaine, Hydroxypropyltrimonium Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Hydrolyzed Brazil Nut Protein, Wheat Amino Acids, Persea Gratissima (Avocado) Oil, Glycerin, Tocopheryl Acetate, Ascorbyl Palmitate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, PEG-30 Castor Oil , Polyquaternium-7, Sodium Sulfate, Fragrance (Parfum), Geraniol, Linalool, Citronellol, Limonene, Sodium Chloride, Polysorbate 80, Sodium Gluconate, Maltodextrin, Potassium Sorbate, Sodium Benzoate, Phenoxyethanol, Annatto (CI 75120) <ILN39445>

I put on the conditioner, on purpose this time, left it on for a few minutes, and then rinsed. The creamy Aveda Shampure Conditioner seems relatively lightweight to me compared to the JOICO K-PAK Treatment that I usually use. It also contains morikue™ protein to fortify hair like the shampoo.

Next, I used the travel size Ouai Leave-In product that I received in my Barney’s Beauty Bag that I’ve been using since I got it. Then I dried and flat ironed my hair as usual.

My hair has been coming out soft, smooth and frizz-free with Aveda Shampure. It’s been very easy to manage. And it smells great too.

I really like Aveda Shampure Shampoo and Conditioner, especially once I figured out which bottle is which!

  1. I’ve not use Aveda shampoo before. Sadly, I’m not a fan of lavender so I don’t think this would be a good fit for me.

  2. While the fragrance of this wouldn’t work for me I was a diehard Aveda fan for years. I’d drive to the Aveda store 40 minutes from me to stock up. Now of course it’s online and at malls near me. This is a reliable brand.

    1. I agree, Marcia, this would be too strong a scent for you, and yes, it’s a reliable brand. I used to love one of their shampoos that had a cherry sort of scent, but I can’t remember which it was.

  3. I go to a local salon (named differently) but owned by Aveda. Their haircare line is vegan and cruelty-free so that’s good. Their shampoo and conditioner last a while coz you don’t neee a lot. I bought the one intended for colored hair. Omg, the humidIry is killing me right now!

  4. I enjoy a few products from Aveda, I can’t remember which shampoo was my go to but it’s not the Rosemary Mint bc my hair feels so dry and crispy. Maybe it was the Shampure I liked?

  5. I know aveda is a solid brand, but I’ve actually never used their products before. I need to change that!

  6. Can you believe that I’ve never tried Aveda hair products? I’m really tempted but I have so many shampoos and conditioners to go through first!

  7. I don’t know if these will work with my hair type, but the fragrance sounds amazing and I’m intrigued by the calming concept.

    1. Haircare products are so individualized in terms of response, but the Shampure line is formulated for all hair types and the herbal scent is divine. I keep the Pure-Fume Mist in my office – I find it helps me write!
