Battling Frizzy Hair in Summer with KMS Tame Frizz De-Frizz Oil

I’ve written about a million times about my thick, coarse hair. In the humidity of summer, add in frizzy. And then there’s swimming in salt water and jogging in the heat and what those activities do to my hair.

August has been hot and humid, and when it hasn’t been sunny and humid, it’s been raining and humid. Mostly, I’ve been wearing my hair in a ponytail.

KMS California was one of my favorite haircare brands for most of the 1990s and some of the 00s. Somehow, I started trying other brands, not because I didn’t like KMS but just to try new things. In early August, I was sent a bottle of KMS Tame Frizz De-Frizz Oil to try out.

Frizz Fighting Ingredients

KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil is a clear, lightweight, non-greasy, silicone-based “oil”. The key ingredients in the formula that do the work are:

  • Dimethiconol Polymer – protects against humidity
  • Cyclopentasiloxane – lightweight with frizz control.

The complete ingredient list includes:

Cyclopentasiloxane, Dimethiconol, Diethylhexyl Carbonate, Phenyl Trimethicone, Isopropyl Myristate, Glycerin, Acacia Seyal Gum Extract, Caryocar Brasiliense Fruit Oil, Glycyl Glycine, Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate, Water, Lactic Acid, Citric Acid, Fragrance.

I looked up Caryocar Brasiliense Fruit Oil because I was unfamiliar with it. In addition to being edible and perhaps having beneficial effects for athletes to lower post-exercise blood pressure and as an anti-inflammatory, it has a number of hair benefits: anti-static, anti-frizz, and smoothing. How to Use Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil

KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil can be applied to damp hair after shampooing or to dry hair as a “finishing” oil. I have been using primarily after shampooing and towel drying my hair. I pump a couple of pumps (it pumps out only a little bit at a time) for each section of hair and rub it into my hands.

Then I apply it from the ends up, and then blow dry and flat iron my hair. I found this video from KMS very helpful in showing me how to best use the product.

Sometimes I will reapply to my dry hair on a humid day. In fact, yesterday I torture tested it. I washed my hair, and let it air dry. I didn’t flat iron it as I usually do. I drove my ancient Miata convertible to the beach. Next, I decided to check out  the ocean, and it was nice and warm, about 70 degrees. I decided to go in. Unfortunately, a big wave surprised me, breaking over my head and getting my hair wet. Next, I changed into my running clothes, and jogged 3 miles in almost 90 degree temperatures. My hair looked and felt awful in spite of me having washed it just a few hours before. When I got home, I took my wet frazzled hair out of the hair tie and let it dry. Then I applied some KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil, and though my hair still doesn’t look as straight and sleek as it does when I wash, blow dry and flat iron it, it looks presentable. And it didn’t look presentable till I used KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil on it. I was impressed.

What’s It Like to Use Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil

I hate anything that weighs down my hair, even though it’s thick, and I especially hate anything that’s greasy. KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil is neither of those no-nos. The De-frizz Oil makes hair shiny.  Plus it’s absorbed by hair to strengthen it and smooth it.

Here I am after I shampooed and applied Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil to my damp hair, blew it dry, and flat ironed it. This was on a very humid day, and I probably should have applied a little more De-frizz Oil to tame my flyaways, but I didn’t notice them. I also didn’t notice the lipstick on my teeth, grrrr.

It also has a lovely but definitely noticeable scent.  The scent that I would describe as vanilla-lavender (it reminds me of the scent of EVA NYC that I adore) does fade after a few minutes, so it doesn’t interfere with any perfume that I choose to wear. I find the scent so pleasant, that sometimes I wish it would last longer!

My assessment is that KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil is a nice “extra” product for my thick, coarse, frizzy hair. I love the shine, smoothness and the scent it gives my hair.  The marketing of the product says that it provides up to 3 days without frizz. I try to wash my hair every 3 or 4 days in summer, so I could test it out. This summer, KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil hasn’t lasted a full 3 days for my hair, more like 24 hours if it’s humid. If it’s super humid like it’s been and if I do anything active outdoors, my hair returns to coarse and big rather than sleek and smooth. But my hair type coupled with summer humidity and activity definitely are a torture test for any anti-frizz product. I think that thin frizzy hair would be a better candidate for the 3 day anti-frizz promise.

I was curious what others thought about KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil, and the reviews are all raves. People seem to swear by this product. They describe it as a “necessity” for their “thick”, “unruly”, frizzy hair.

KMS Tame Frizz De-frizz Oil comes in a 3.3 fl. oz./100 ml size. The price seems to vary widely according to where you buy it. It was $9.97 at Ulta, but it’s out of stock now. I’m wondering if this product was repackaged recently, accounting for it being out of stock now at Ulta and the label looking different (it’s now black with no red)? At other retailers, it’s priced from $18-23. It’s sold at JC Penney, Jet.com, Walmart, and lots of online retailers like allbeauty.com, beautycarechoices.com.

KMS Tame Frizz collection also has a shampoo and conditioner. I’m thinking for summer, I may have more lasting results if I used all three products. Hmmmm.

Do you have frizzy hair in the summer or year round? Have you tried any of the KMS Tame Frizz hair products?

  1. I love KMS as well, and remember using it during years ago as well.I think that I may have this serum somewhere, and will go check. It sounds perfectly suited for my curly hair that frizzes up with any humidity!

  2. Oh man, it’s been a good decade since I’ve used KMS but I loved them too! I don’t get too many frizzies but I have a friend who desperately needs this product!

  3. If you weren’t so darn healthy you’d be able to get away with just about anything! LOL. I am pretty sure that Lisa reviewed this with love too. It sounds like a hot weather life saver.

    1. You mean the running and swimming, lol?! It was such a beautiful day, I just couldn’t resist. But you’re right, nothing can make it through that. I was so impressed by how positive just about all the reviews were on every source I consulted. Glad that Lisa is a fan, too. Good stuff!

  4. This sounds really nice and perfect for my hair! I live in the south so I continuously battle frizz!! The scent also sounds pretty awesome so this one is going high on my to buy list!

  5. I love your torture test description!! You ran three miles in 90 degrees? I’m so impressed!!! Truly. I used to enjoy running so much….shoot, I’d settle for enjoying a trip to the beach or a ride in your convertible right now.

    1. Come on over, Shelley, while the weather is still good here, lol. Just came back from the beach, and I was planning to go for a jog but it’s thundering. Got my hair colored and cut yesterday, and the stylist didn’t put on enough frizz control. I certainly need some KMS Frizz Tamer next time I shampoo

  6. It’s been a long time since I’ve used KMS products, but I should try this out. My hair gets slightly frizzed flyaways, especially is I let it air dry!

  7. This humidity has been no joke. Anything would be nice to make my hair presentable. I have very long hair and am at a loss what to do with it when it’s this humid. Sounds like I need this oil

  8. I think I can handle the lavender mixed with vanilla (I love the latter though). It’s always nice to find a haircare product that solves the most common problem such as frizz

  9. KMS was one of my fave brands in the 90s as well. They have definitely added quite a bit of new products to their line. And, my hair could surely use some frizz taming.

  10. Looks like it works! I never use anything lol, If its that frizzy it probably means its hot which + pony tail! LOL

  11. Sounds like a good product for thicker hair. I have very thin hair, but a lot of it! I can’t really do anything with oil bc I end up uber greasy 🙁

    1. I don’t know why KMS calls this stuff “oil”. Although it has a tiny amount of oil in it, it feels like lightweight silicone and it completely disappears into the hair, and it has no oiliness whatsoever. Although it makes my super thick, coarse hair soft, I need something even stronger. I think it’s better suited to fine frizzy hair??
