The Organic Skin Company: Lipstick You Can Feel Good About Wearing

red lipsticks - Blossom and Flame from The Organic Skin Company, neversaydiebeauty.com

I wear lipstick just about all the time. Every day. Almost all day long. Over the years, that’s a lot of lipstick that I’ve probably ingested.

In fact, as I was writing this post, I received an email from Breast Cancer Prevention Partners about supporting the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics and Personal Care Products, a bill brought to the U.S. Congress by Representative Jan Schakowsky.

So I was excited when The Organic Skin Company offered to send me two of their better-for-you lipsticks to try. Plus they sent my favorites: red lipsticks!

A Bit about The Organic Skin Company

But first, let me tell you a little about The Organic Skin Company (TOSC) and how they roll. The Organic Skin Co. was started by two women in New Zealand who wanted to make makeup that reflected their values and attitudes toward health and good stewardship of the planet. TOSC is dedicated to doing the right thing (my words, not theirs). They work hard to keep the consumer informed about what they’re buying. Their products are cruelty-free, gluten-free, vegan, and chockfull of organic ingredients. They give you the date of manufacture for your products, and tell you when the product should be recycled.

Their packaging is attractive and made with sustainable products. They print with vegetable inks.

In crafting their products, they use a process called Supercritical Extraction to extract plants’ nutrients without alcohol to create extracts that are all-natural, pure and more potent than conventionally sourced extracts. In fact, they state that their extracts can be 50 times more potent than conventionally sourced ingredients. Impressive. And their ingredients are grown by agricultural partners – farmers in rural India  – using organic farming practices that are good for the land and for the farmers.

Speaking of being good for the land, TOSC believes in reforestation, and via their partnership with the Eden Reforestation Project, they plant a tree for every product sold.

Please visit The Organic Skin Company website to read more about the origins of the company and their approach to business and good works.

Lip Service Lipstick

As I mentioned, I received two tubes of Lip Service Lipstick. Both lipsticks came in shimmery boxes made from sustainable forestry card stock with rose gold print.

The tops of the tubes seem to be made from sustainable wood, maybe bamboo? They’re very attractive and natural-looking.

Lip Service Lipstick is crafted with organic calendula and rosemary supercritical extracts plus nourishing oils and carnauba wax. Lip Service Lipstick contains 71.1% organic ingredients, and as stated above, it is vegan and cruelty-free. The lipstick comes in 12 shades ranging from neutrals to deep to bright shades in matte, shimmer or sheer formulas. I received:

red lipsticks - Blossom and Flame from The Organic Skin Company, neversaydiebeauty.com

  • Blossom: a bright cool-toned pink-red
  • Flame: a beautiful neutral-toned true red.

I adore both reds (Blossom looks a bit redder on my lips in person). I wear Blossom when I’m wearing cool-toned clothing and pink/purple makeup shades.

I think I find myself wearing Flame somewhat more often because it’s more of a true red that I tend to gravitate to. Even though it’s called Flame, the shade isn’t overwhelming, meaning it doesn’t scream RED!!

I can wear it everyday and not look out of place or like it’s too much.

And I’m thrilled by that because I can wear either of these red lipsticks all day and not be concerned that I’m ingesting my lipstick.

I love the slightly curved “lip shape” of the bullet that makes application a breeze. It hugs that shape of my lips and makes a lip liner unnecessary.

Also, the shades do not bleed, run or settle into liplines. Lip Service Lipstick goes on smoothly almost like a lip balm, and it covers in one or two swipes. Lip Service Lipstick has no flavor or scent that I can discern.

Both shades have a semi-matte finish. They feel lightweight on my lips. They are lightly hydrating when first applied. They last on my lips for about 3-4 hours, but they do not last through a meal. As the lipstick fades, it does leave some color on my lips. As I’ve said before, I don’t have a problem reapplying my lipstick after a few hours. That’s why I have pretty purse mirrors!

The Lip Service lipsticks contain 4.3 g and are priced at $34.50. Although a bit pricey like luxury lipsticks, these lipsticks are made with a high percentage of organic and good-for-you ingredients and none of the stuff you may want to avoid.

Ingredients: Ricinus communis (castor) seed oil*, caprylic/capric triglyceride, oriza sativa (rice bran) wax, copernicia certifera (carnauba) wax, helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary)supercritical extract, simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil*, punica granatum (pomegranate) supercritical extract, calendula officinalis (calendula) supercritical extract, Red 33 (CI 17200), Red 6&7 (CI 15850). *organic

I was curious about the rest of the line so I spent quite a bit of time on the website. Their foundation and concealer are listed as coming soon, but I imagine that they will have shades to fit a good variety of skin tones judging from the diversity of the models on their site. I am swooning over their cream eyeshadows and their personalizable palettes where you can pop in their round shadow, blush and concealer “pods”. I am especially curious about the eyeshadows, not only because I adore creams but also because they don’t distinguish among the finishes. A number of the shades look like mattes while others look like they may be satins. All the shades look very pigmented! Oh, and there are skincare products too. Head over to The Organic Skin Company on Facebook or the TOSC website and take a look!

  1. These are absolutely beautiful lipsticks, and Blossom is definitely a shade thatI would wear a lot. I really prefer wearing healthier lipsticks because of how much we end up ingesting from our lips. It’s pretty scary when you really think about all of those chemicals since one basically ends up eating a lot of lipstick! I love both of these shades on you, Allison!

  2. Pretty! Those do look nice on you 🙂
I like Galaxy on their website. It’s a shame I don’t see a red that wouldn’t pull pink on me though. But maybe as business grows they’ll add more shades.

  3. I love the idea of calendula in lipstick! Why don’t more companies do that?! I also really like the wood feature on the cap

  4. What a great line discovery. We need more organic brands. The tubes are so nice and I’d love being able to pull one out of my purse to reapply and show it off. Cream eyeshadows? That’s my downfall. Thanks for informing us.

  5. Flame is such a dynamic color! I’m in love! Aside from the gorgeous packaging and beautiful details, I am really excited about their efforts towards sustainability and being a cruelty free brand. I love supporting companies that share these values with me.

    1. I’m glad that you’re interested in The Organic Skin Co., Kathryne! The women who started and run the company are terrific, and the two hippies that I tried are wonderful!
