My New Brooklyn Hat Co. Fedora from Tenth Street Hats

information

I’m a hat person. I have loved and worn hats for years. I probably should have been born decades earlier when hats were de rigeur, but I am doing my best to try to help them make a comeback. I have lots of them in all different styles. I am always looking for an occasion to wear a hat.

Needless to say, I was beyond excited when Tenth Street Hats contacted me about trying one of their hats for review.

I went to their website, and I was blown away by the number of hats for both women and men on offer. They have so many different styles, e.g. cloches, floppy hats, fedoras, caps, Panama hats, round crown hats etc., as well as hats in a variety of materials for all seasons. They have a multitude of hat brands, some I was familiar with and some that were new to me.

I was looking for a style that I don’t already own, so after much consideration I chose the Avignon fedora from Brooklyn Hat Company. I also wanted a color that I don’t have, so I was delighted that the Avignon came in navy blue.

It arrived about a week later. It happened to be raining when I got home and I discovered the box waiting on my doorstep. I was a little concerned about whether it had gotten soaked in the rain. But the shipping box was very heavy, and the hat inside was protected by bubblewrap, tissue paper and the hat itself was in a plastic bag. Yay, it was perfectly dry! The crown and band of the hat was also protected by a piece of stiff foam. Nicely done!

Once I removed the hat from the box, I was astounded by the quality. It is made with superior soft, smooth wool felt, and it is the perfect weight for cool weather. The crown is lined with a thick silky fabric with the Brooklyn Hats Company logo, the Brooklyn Bridge embossed or woven into the silk.

The brim is stiff but also flexible. The band along the lower crown is a burgundy brown shade, and it’s sewn into the crown. I had never seen that detail before, but it looks great. The hat is so stylish and so well made.

The Avignon fedora is one size fits all, although other styles came in different sizes. I was a little concerned that it might be too big for my size small head.

When I first tried the hat on, it was a little big for me. But I discovered that it had an adjustable ribbon sewn into the band inside that I could pull and tie to fit. Also included in the package were two thick pieces of foam called sizing tape that could be applied under the grosgrain ribbon inner sweatband for an even snugger fit. In the photo above of the inside of the hat, I had placed the sizing tapes on top of the ribbon instead of underneath, but after I read the instructions, I moved them. Silly me. Now the hat fits me perfectly!

I love my new Brooklyn Hats fedora, and I know I will get a lot of wear out of it now and for years to come.

A word or two about Tenth Street Hats and the Brooklyn Hat Company. Tenth Street Hats has been in the hat-making business since 1921. Although they promote hats made the old-fashioned way with attention to detail and high quality, they sell hats the new way: online via their website. Brooklyn Hat Company began their business in a small studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn right near the Brooklyn Bridge. Tenth Street is the official store of the Brooklyn Hat Company.

I was curious about how other people felt about Tenth Street Hats so I checked out the reviews. I was shocked that there were 24 pages of reviews just from 2019! Many of the reviews mentioned how helpful the customer service was both for helping to choose a hat or to exchange or return it. They have an excellent guarantee: “…a 30-day, hassle-free return or exchange policy as well as a one-year, craftsmanship guarantee on our hats; we’ll replace your damaged hat for free within the first 12 months.” I was surprised by how many reviews were from men! If your guy is a hat person, Tenth Street Hats is a fantastic source for them as well as for women.

If you are a hat person or someone on your gift list is a hat person, I encourage you to check out Tenth Street Hats website. For Black Friday, they had a buy one, get one free promotion. What a deal that is! I hope it will continue or they’ll have something similar for today, Cyber Monday.

  1. Hi, Allison – You look awesome 😎 in that hat! I just bought a cream-color fedora from a vintage shop the other day and posted it on Instagram. I’m pleased to hear about Tenth Street Hats because I’ve been looking for more styles than what I already have. Thanks for sharing this! – Angie, http://www.yourtrueselfblog.com

    1. Thank you, Angie! I love the fedora, and I don’t have any hats other than my Red Sox cap that’s navy blue. Your cream colored vintage fedora sounds stunning. I know I follow you on IG, but I never see your posts. I will search for your feed to find the hat now! Definitely check out Tenth Street Hats coz they have great customer service and an excellent variety of brands and styles!

  2. What a great hat Allison!!! It looks like a quality hat and it’s fabulous on you. I’m also a hat person, always have been. I will definitely give the site a look and set my sights on one,I’m sure. What a great review, your description of the quality really makes me want one 🙂 . Don’t know if you’re snowed in like we are here in upstate,N.Y. (Troy to be exact) but if you are stay warm.xo

    1. Thank you, Laura! I was shocked by the quality of the wool felt of this hat. Frankly, I was expecting it to be more like a hat I had received in a subbed box a couple of years ago that was thin and floppy. This hat was made from superior quality wool felt on a real hat mold. The stitching is amazing too. The only thing I wish I had was a hat box, but I will buy one for it and for another cloche hat that I bought last year. You really should check out Tenth Street Hats website. I wish I had gotten this review up last week because the BOGO event ends today (but I hope they’ll bring it back again before Christmas). We’ll having two nor’easters over 3 days. The snow started Sunday afternoon, changed to rain early Monday, and changed back to snow around 4pm. It’s supposed to continue snowing through early afternoon tomorrow. I’m hoping that I won’t get as much snow as you probably got in upstate NY. I am so not ready for snow this early! Take care xoxo

    1. Thank you, Amber! If you or someone you know is a hat person, you should definitely check out Tenth Street Hats – great quality, customer service and lots of styles!

  3. That hat looks really good on you! I need to check out Tenth Street Hats and see what styles they have.

  4. I am such a hat lover and this is a great Fall hat to add to any wardrobe. 🙂 I love it on you!! I like that they have been in business for so long too – it means they are high quality. Thanks for sharing!

  5. What a beautiful hat! I never pictured myself as a hat wearer, but I did find myself dabbling it in a little more this year. It’s lovely to hear that their customer service is on point. They sound like an A+ company to order from!

    1. Because hats haven’t been “in style” for decades, it can be a little harder to wear them. But because it’s cold here in MA in the winter, a hat of some kind is a necessity. And at the beach, a hat to protect my face and prevent my hair from fading is a necessity. So I just kind of eased into hats for all occasions!

    1. So the amazing thing is that Tenth Street Hats isn’t a brick and mortar shop, it’s online only so they can keep the costs down. I was a little concerned about choosing a hat online, but it worked out perfectly!

  6. It looks fabulous. I wear hats too, I prefer fedora style because the size is just right for my head. Aside from the style, hats somewhat protect our faces too from the sun.

  7. I really like that hat. It looks wonderful on you as well. I don’t normally wear hats, but I think I should start. I’ve always enjoyed all the wonderful hats.

    1. I love hats so much that I wore hats even when they weren’t on trend. But as you said, it does look like hats are making a comeback. You should start wearing hats, too. Join me!

  8. That hat looks perfect on you!!! I wish I could rock it as good as you!!! I love the idea of the sizing tape. I have a smaller head so finding hats that fit can be tough.

    1. Thanks, Nina! Between the drawstring and the sizing tape, the hat fits me perfectly. I too have a smaller head. I had been a little concerned about getting the one size hat without trying it on, but I needn’t have worried 😉
