Project Pan: August 2020 Beauty Empties

The beginning of a new month means taking stock of how I’m doing on Project Pan, the group that sets goals to monitor how many beauty products each of us has used up in the past month. And like any empties post, it makes sense to give an assessment of the product.

I started August with 57 empties through the end of July. I did OK this month, using up 8 beauty products plus a small fragrance spray and a skincare sample that I won’t count.

Bath & Beauty

  • Hemp Seed Hand Wash by Earthly Body:  Between gardening and washing my hands to prevent COVID-19, I wash my hands repeatedly throughout the day. I keep this bottle of Hemp Seed Hand Wash with orange & eucalyptus oils at my kitchen sink where it sees the most action. Hemp Seed Hand Wash has grains in the thick formula, and it does a great job cleaning dirty or sticky hands. This bottle lasted me 4 and a half months. I loved it and highly recommend it! Repurchase? I had another bottle waiting in the wings.
  • Colgate Total Toothpaste Advanced Whitening: I’ve used Colgate Total Toothpaste on and off for decades. I picked this up after I finished up my stash of my favorite Marvis flavored Italian toothpastes. Colgate is a fine mainstream toothpaste with fluoride. Repurchase? I did. Though I would love to go back to Marvis for a treat, I have another double package of Colgate to use up first.
  • Zum Bar Patchouli Soap: Even though the wrapper says Zum Bar Goat’s Milk Soap Frankincense & Myrrh, I am using that one now, and I used up Zum Bar Patchouli Soap but forgot to save the wrapper. Although I love the creamy but clean rinsing formula of Zum Bar Goat’s Milk soaps and I like the patchouli scent, the Patchouli soap had little dark brown grains that functioned to exfoliate skin. However, I disliked the little brown flecks that sometimes stayed on the walls and floor of my bathtub. Repurchase? Though I like patchouli scents, I will try other Zum Bar scents without grains in them.
  • Secret Outlast Solid Antiperspirant/Deodorant (travel size): Most days, I use a natural deodorant. But if I am going somewhere or if it is a very hot, humid day, I will use a traditional antiperspirant. Secret Outlast Solid AP/Deo is an effective antiperspirant for me. Repurchase? I just bought another travel size.
  • Amope Foot File Extra Coarse: I just love my Amope. I bought it a couple of years ago, and it is one of my favorite beauty tools along with my Dyson hair dryer. I have replaced the file a couple of times since I bought it. It comes in a set of two file replacements. Repurchase? I popped in the second replacement file, so now I need to buy another set to keep on hand. If you are in the market for a foot file, just buy this one. It’s great!

Skincare

  • Theraderm Clinical Skin Care Cleansing Wash: I love using gel face wash in the summer because my skin is often dirtier from sweating, digging in the garden, etc.  I liked Theraderm Cleansing Wash. It was clear, fragrance-free, lathered well, and rinsed clean. It did not leave my skin feeling parched. Repurchase? As the temperature drops, I switch to lotion or cream cleansers, so perhaps I will repurchase Theraderm Cleansing Wash next spring.
  • Drunk Elephant C-Tango Multivitamin Eye Cream: I ended up liking this eye cream even more than I thought I did initially. The pop-up pump was terrific. The off-white gel-cream was rather lightweight but hydrating. Good stuff. Repurchase? Because I have so many eye creams, I won’t be buying it now. But it’s a good one if you’re in the market for an eye cream.
  • Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid SPF 50: Another favorite of mine, Paula’s Choice Youth-Extending Daily Hydrating Fluid is a very lightweight fluid that sinks in on contact. If you have normal, combination or oily skin, I think you would really love this sunscreen fluid/moisturizer. If your skin is dry or very dry, it may not be enough on its own. In the summer, I often can get away with it by itself, but if my skin is feeling dry or during colder, drier times of year, I will layer a moisturizer over it. It’s a chemical sunscreen. Repurchase? Yes, I did. I am on my fourth tube of it.
  • Tatcha The Deep Cleanser, sample packet: I wish I could remember this little sample packet. I should have taken notes. I remember that I liked it, and it was a thick, off-white cream. I am not sure what made it a Deep Cleanser. Purchase? Probably not.

Fragrance

  • Iris Fauve by Atelier des Ors, 1 ml sample spray: I have been meaning to do a blogpost on this sample from online fragrance retailer Indigo Perfumery that sells decants as well as full size bottles. I will get to my review soon. Repurchase? I bought a 10 ml purse spray size of Iris Fauve recently. Lovely powdery scent.

So with 8 beauty empties in August, I am now at 65 empties. I still think the chances are slim that I will make my goal from last year of 130 empties. Frankly, I doubt I’ll make 100. But again, I am still happy that I’m making progress emptying bottles and jars!

Tosses/Expired Products

  • Pumpkin Enzyme Peel Mask:  Although this natural mask made from real pumpkin had a vegetal smell that took a little getting used to, it was a terrific mask. Honestly, after washing it off, my skin felt so clean, so taut and so healthy. I am sorry I didn’t use it often enough to finish it up before it “turned”.
  • Ardell Magnetic Accents False Lashes: I was eager to try these false lashes when they first came out a couple of years ago. Because they didn’t require glue, I thought they would be easier to apply. Plus these were “accents” – small size lash strips – that I thought would fit me better. The accent size was great, but trying to get an upper lash and a lower lash to connect around my own lashes was awful. I can’t remember if I ever got them on. Why am I saving them? I’m tossing them now. I thought the Ardel Magnetic lashes with the magnetic eyeliner was much easier to use.

  1. I always look forward to your empty post. With the changes in the world I don’t see how you can finish as much as before. I used to use up an eye makeup remover every other month but the one I have open now isn’t any lower in the bottle.

  2. The magnetic lashes can be tricky. Some days I’m like a pro, some days a disaster for me. The magnetic liner can be messy and because I have hooded eyes, it always stain my lids, ugh.
