My 2021 Skincare Discovery: Typology Skincare Made in France

PR Samples, Affiliate Links

Since February, I have been using Typology Skincare, a global brand with products made in France. It is undoubtedly a skincare brand that you should get to know too. Typology is an affordable, cruelty-free, vegan brand made with natural and organic botanical ingredients including highly effective active ingredients packaged in attractive, recyclable, apothecary-style packaging. I would also describe Typology as a minimalist brand because their products include the minimum number of essential ingredients to be effective. Importantly, the products have no added fragrances, and their packaging is simple and easily recyclable. You can find their products for sale on the Typology website.

Typology Skincare has a diagnostic survey that you can take on their website to help you determine which of their many products will suit you best. I took the survey, and Typology generously sent me lots of products to try out. Today, I will review several of them and save the rest for another day.

Hydrating Cleansing Bar with Palmarosa

I am a fan of bar soap because it is easy and quick to use, and there is little to recycle. Typology’s Hydrating Cleansing Bar is an exemplary bar soap because it is truly hydrating. It is handmade in France via the cold-pressing method so that the botanical ingredients retain more of their nutrients. This gentle cleansing and hydrating soap is made with 8% super fats from botanicals oils including palmarosa (a grass from Nepal that has antiviral and antibacterial benefits), lemongrass and verbena that maintain the skin’s acid mantle. The ingredients are 100% naturally derived.

Hydrating Cleansing Bar is for all skin types but especially suited to dry or dehydrated skin.

The bar contains 100g/3/53 oz. and is priced at $12.80. I can honestly say that this soap is so worth the price because unlike other natural soaps I’ve used, it doesn’t melt away but seemingly lasts forever!

Ingredients & derivation: OLEA EUROPAE FRUIT OIL* – olive botanical oil AQUA – water COCOS NUCIFERA OIL* – coconut botanical oil SODIUM HYDROXIDE – non-mercurial soda extracted from salt BUTYROSPERMUM PARKII BUTTER* – shea butter HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL* – sunflower botanical oil LITSEA CUBEBA FRUIT OIL**- exotic verbena essential oil ILLITE – clay CYMBOPOGON SCHOENANTHUS OIL* – lemongrass essential oil CYMBOPOGON MARTINI OIL* – palmarosa essential oil CITRAL, LIMONENE, GERANIOL, LINALOOL, CITRONELLOL – molecules naturally present in essential oils

Organic Orange Blossom Hydrolate (Toner)

The hydrolate that Typology selected for me is Organic Orange Blossom. I had never used an orange blossom toner before, but it is lovely and quite appropriate for my skin type. It is formulated to restore radiance to dull, dry or mature skin. It is very gentle, and I use it after cleansing.

The scent is natural, derived from bitter orange flower or Neroli. It reminds me of our trip to Seville and the orange trees throughout the city. Nice memories! This is what Typology says about the natural orange blossom fragrance:

  • In aromatherapy, orange blossom hydrolate is known to calm nerves, promote self-confidence and create a feeling of comfort.

  • Orange blossom hydrolate can be used in cases of stress and emotional exhaustion.

Both sound good to me! Different from the citrus scent that many orange products made in the U.S. have, I’m enjoying the bitter orange blossom, Neroli fragrance. This hydrolate is very luxurious and the scent is definitely relaxing.

The plastic rectangular bottle is easily recycled. It contains 3.51 fl. oz./100 g and is priced at $11.60.

99.4% naturally-derived.

Ingredients: Citrus Aurantium Amara Flower Water, Benzyl Alcohol, Dehydroacetic Acid, Aqua.

Typology also sent me 8 sustainable bamboo washable pads in a cute cotton pouch that can be used to apply the Organic Orange Blossom Hydrolate or to remove makeup. Another way that this brand is eco-friendly!

Glycolic Acid 10% & Mastic Tree Extract

This water-type serum with 10% glycolic acid is an exfoliant and an astringent/pore tightener. I use Typology’s Exfoliating Serum several nights a week. It sometimes has a bit of a sting because of the 10% GA especially if I forget and use it after I have tweezed my face, though the sting truly lasts only for a couple of seconds. In fact, this GA serum contains soothing ingredients like chamomile to mitigate the sting. I think glycolic acid is a must-use ingredient, and I am very pleased with this one. About 3-4 drops of this fragrance-free liquid covers my entire face.

The small rectangular brown glass apothecary-style dropper bottle that I have contains 15 ml/0.51 fl. oz. and is priced at $13.50. It comes in a larger 30 ml size for $26.50.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Glycolic Acid, Glycerin, Sodium Hydroxide, Polysorbate 20, Sodium Benzoate, Sodium Levulinate, Alcohol, Bisabolol, Potassium Sorbate, Xanthan Gum, Citric Acid, Lecithin, Pistacia Lentiscus Gum, Chamomilla Recutita (Matricaria) Flower Extract

Eye Contour Serum: 3% Q10 & Macadamia Oil

I am laughing because I should have known to read all the material on the products I received before using them. The 3% Q10 & Macadamia Oil Serum doesn’t say “Eye Contour Serum” on the front of the brown glass bottle, so I started out using it on my entire face. It certainly can be used on the whole face to help remove lines and wrinkles, but I am glad that I eventually discovered that I should be using it around my eyes instead. I cannot tell you how much my dry and sensitive eyes love this lightweight, absorbent, fragrance-free, 97% naturally derived oil. It’s the best!!

The 15 ml/0.51 fl. oz. bottle is priced at $19.40.

Ingredients: Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride, Ubiquinone, Tocopherol, Glycine Soya (Soybean) Oil

Hydrating Serum: Wheat-Derived Hyaluronic Acid 3% & B5 2%

I am usually a big fan of hydrophilic hyaluronic acid for my dry skin, but it took me a little while to truly love this one. In fact, I disliked it at first until I figured out how to use it for my skin. Whereas the other serums I’ve used from Typology are lightweight liquids and oils, Typology’s Hydrating Serum is a “Concentrated Serum”, a thicker liqui-gel, though it comes in an apothecary dropper-bottle like the others. Initially, I was using way too much of this rich serum. I discovered that only 2 drops is enough for my entire face. More than that is too much and very unnecessary. Now, I like it a lot. It leaves my skin with a protected, velvety feeling. It’s especially terrific when my skin feels parched. Sometimes, I just add a drop or two to my moisturizer, and then I’m all set to go.

In addition to HA, Hydrating Serum contains Panthenol or B5, an ingredient I first learned about in Pantene Shampoo, to help stimulate the growth of new skin cells. The serum is clear, fragrance-free and vegan. But since the HA is derived from wheat, it is not gluten-free.

The 15 ml bottle is priced at $14.50 and the larger 30 ml size is $26.50.

Ingredients: Aqua (Water), Sodium Hyaluronate, Panthenol, 1,2-Hexanediol, Xylitylglucoside, Anhydroxylitol, Benzyl Alcohol, Xylitol, Citric Acid, Glucose, Sodium Hydroxide, Dehydroacetic Acid

Firming Botanical Blend with Nopal

100% naturally derived, this lightweight, velvety, light yellow, naturally-fragranced oil from nopal, prickly pear and immortelle (Helichrysum, a medicinal desert plant) is the perfect nighttime oil for my dry skin. An oil made from desert plants is just what I need for my dry skin. I think this anti-wrinkle, redensifying serum is my very favorite from Typology! It feels and smells soooooo good!

Firming Botanical Blend with Nopal comes in a clear glass, rectangular dropper bottle containing 15 ml/0.51 fl. oz. and is priced at $30.60. A little goes a long way.

Ingredients & derivation: Squalane*(squalane), Hibiscus Sabdariffa seed oil* (hibiscus oil), C13-15 Alkane*(hemisqualane), Opuntia Ficus-Indica Seed oil* (prickly pear oil), Helianthus Annuus Seed Oil (sunflower oil), Lavandula Hybrida Herb oil* (lavender super essential oil), Helichrysum Italicum Flower Oil (immortelle essential oil), Linalool**, Opuntia Ficus-Indica Stem extract (nopal plant cells), Tocopherol (vitamin E), Glycine soja oil (soybean oil), Limonene**, Geraniol**.

*from organic farming **occurs naturally in essential oils

More Info and Final Thoughts

The Typology Skincare product line is extensive. These products were suggested for my dry, mature skin. I recommend that you go to the Typology website, take the survey, and peruse the product line yourself. In addition to facial skincare, Typology has body and haircare products. I know you will be tempted by what you find on the website.

I have a few other Typology products to tell you about soon. But I can’t stress enough how delighted I am by what I have tried so far. I know that “clean beauty” is the skincare watchword of the moment, but I believe that these high quality skincare products are the real deal.

  1. These sound amazing and they sound so reasonably priced and a terrific value! These are going to the top of that list you’ve created for me!

    1. I agree, Kristi, I love the Typology Paris aesthetic, and also the fact that they have minimized the number of ingredients and emphasize easily recyclable packaging. With the affordable prices, what more could we want?!

  2. The packaging on this is terrific and adds to the clean vibe of these products. The eye serum is what would get me the most excited. I would love to try that.

    1. I think Typology Paris’ minimalist, active botanical approach is where the skincare biz is or should be heading. The eye serum/oil was such a surprise. I think you’d love it. So soothing!
