Scala Collezione Medium Brim Cotton Sun Hat UPF 50

Scala Collezion Medium Brim Sun Hat

I love hats. And they are just as important in summer as they are in winter. My color-treated red hair fades dramatically during the summer, so wearing a hat when I’m outdoors helps. Keeping the sun off my face is a priority for me. A hat with a nice brim is what I look for.

I just received a new summer sun hat to add to my collection from Scala Collezione in exchange for an honest review.

I think it’s super cute. The medium brim sun hat has a 2 1/2 inch flexible brim so I can turn it up or down depending on my mood, the look I’m going for and the angle of the sun. Plus it can easily be folded or rolled and tucked into a suitcase for travel.

Because it’s made of 100% cotton, it’s lightweight, perfect to wear to the beach. The cotton fabric looks like linen, and has a stiffness to the fabric that helps it keep its shape. I chose a light aqua shade that I think is called Seaglass to go with a couple of my swimsuits. I love the color!

Inside, the hat has a drawstring to make it tighter or looser to fit the size of your head. You can also tighten it up if it’s a particularly windy day so it’ll stay on better.

The crown of the hat is lined with a white lining and band. I’m hoping that the red dye on my hair won’t wreck it because it is so pristine-looking now. But then, hats are meant to be worn and enjoyed. I can always buy a new one next year, if need be, because my Scala hat is very affordable.

Scala Collezione hats are extremely well-made. In fact, they’re hand-crafted since 1921 of high quality materials. Plus the hat has a UPF (ultraviolet protection factor) of 50+! That’s the highest protection factor there is, and it’s in the “excellent” range. The tag says that the hat will protect me from 97.5% of the sun’s rays, and that’s about the best beauty and health tip there is. Perfect for the beach.

I love my Scala sun hat. They come in 25 different colors from black to brights and pastels. There are other cute styles available too. Scala hats are sold in stores, on cruise ships I’ve been told, and in catalogues. It is widely available online: on Village Hat Shop where you can get free shipping, on Amazon, on TravelSmith and a zillion other sites. The price is usually less than $30 for this very cute and very effective sun hat.

  1. This hat looks super cute on you. I have been looking at these very types of hats on Amazon. I got a style like this several years ago off QVC. I think the material was thicker because it really made me hot and sweaty when I wore it. Needless to say it did not get worn much. I must be a hot head. ha ha I need to find one with some steam holes. ; )

    1. Thank you, Laura! I love this hat and it comes in a million colors. And you can find it on Amazon too! Was your hat from QVS 100% cotton? Well, sometimes it can be hot wearing a hat. That’s why I don’t wear a hat when I jog. Have you tried straw hats? They are usually cooler. I think Scala Collezione makes straw hats too. PS I mailed the lippie yesterday 🙂

      1. I usually wear visors to keep the sun somewhat off my face. I just got too hot with anything completely covering my head. Hormones!!! 😉 So excited to try the lippie! EEEEEEEEEE!!!!
        Thanks again Allison.

  2. That hat looks soooo cute on you! Can’t wait to see it on you at the beach!!!
PS- I love wearing hats too!

    1. Thank you, Lois! I love this hat! Maybe I’ll go up to the beach today! When are you guys going to be there? The weather hasn’t been cooperative so I should go when the sun’s out!

    1. Thank you, Helen! I’m a big fan of beach hats, but this is the first one I’ve owned with real sun protection! I hope to wear it to the beach today since the sun is making a rare appearance today 🙂

  3. That hat is too cute! Always nice to have a hat that looks good on you! I always feel like a nerd in hats I can pull off a cap but that’s about it 🙂

  4. You look so YOUNG!!!!
I almost NEVER go outside without a hat, so have many, many of them.

    1. I’ve been reading about it too, Stephanie, and the rays do pass through fabric! I’m psyched to have this UPF 50 hat, and I need some SPF clothing too! You should check out all the colors, they’re amazing!

    1. Thank you, Marcia! I haven’t tried wearing it in my convertible. I know I could tighten the cord around the crown, but I’d hate to lose it!

    1. Thank you, Nidia! I have several sun hats too, and I always thought they were protecting my face and hair. I didn’t think that the sun’s rays were going right through the fabric!

    1. I hear that a number of women feel the way you do, Kristina. I guess hats aren’t for everyone! I’m lucky that I actually love hats, and since I spend a lot of time at the beach and outdoors, that’s a good thing 🙂

  5. I have a white hat just like that one – it was a gift from my mom. I always think hats are a must especially with a great brim that protects our skin 🙂

    1. Oh yes, I forgot to mention the bad hair day, Mercerdes! I usually stick my hair in a pony tail at the beach, but I think that also qualifies for the bad hair day look 😉
