FOTD: Orange and Blue

cream shimmer eye shadow

When it comes to makeup, I usually stick to neutral shades, gold/bronze or purples for eye makeup. So I don’t know what came over me last week. I decided to dig out the gorgeous Jordana Cat Eyeliner in Twilight, a deep blue, and one of the Milani Fierce Foil Eyeshine palettes that I don’t use that often: Venice with the blue shades. And instead of nude or pink or even red lips and cheeks, I went with tangerine shades. Nothing like a little change for a change  😆

It was also a hot day so instead of foundation or BB/CC cream that I think is actually heavier than most foundations, I decided to play with my CoverFX Custom Cover Drops. I usually use the drops to alter the shade of a foundation or BB/CC that’s slightly off, but this time I decided to mix the drops with something different – primer – and see how it goes. I mixed the CoverFX Drops with YSL Beauty Blur Primer and it produced a lightweight, tinted coverage, meaning you could see my freckles through it. But I liked the look and feel of it especially for a hot and humid day.

For my eyes, I patted on the blue-gray shade (lower left) from the Venice palette on my entire lid, and the shade really sheered out colorwise but left a nice shimmer.

For once, I skipped eye primer because I was just fooling around, but I wouldn’t usually do that. The Milani cream shadow would have benefitted from the eye primer with a less sheer look, I think. I considered adding one of the bright blues to the middle of the lid, but I thought it would be too much along with Jordana Cat Eyeliner in Twilight on my upper lid. On the outer portion of my lower lashline, I applied essence gel waterproof eyeliner in a teal shade.

Orange and blue are opposites on the color wheel, so they can be worn together. Though the blues aren’t shades I wear often, I thought it was fun to wear them for a change. Maybe I’ll get brave and try one the deep blue or the turquoise shade from the Milani Venice palette next time!

BTW, I really love the Revlon Ultra HD Lipstick. The shade is very pretty, and the lightweight formula is wonderful. Why don’t I wear it more often? And I have one in red too that I should also wear. This is an under-appreciated lipstick!!

    1. Thanks, Helen 🙂 You are too kind as always! Unfortunately, the photos were taken at night under artificial light so the warm glow changed the look a bit, but whatever 😉

  1. I love the blue on you! It looks so pretty with your coloring, and it works really well with the orange lips.

      1. Because of your reviews, I ended up getting all the Jordana Cat Eyeliners. I haven’t tried the green yet, but I’m sure it’s stunning.

    1. Thank you, Shipra! The Revlon Ultra HD lipsticks really are wonderful. It is moisturizing though not as much as Too Faced La Creme which I find ultra-creamy, but the Revlon is so lightweight, I just love wearing it!

  2. Milani has such good quality products and the Quad eyeshadows looked so pretty. I’ll check this one out for sure. I’m obsessed with eyeshadows! I like the Revlon HD lipsticks too – very creamy and pigmented. xo

    1. I agree. I love Milani! I especially like the Florence and Rome Fierce Foil Eyeshine palettes, but I wanted to try the Venice for a change. I’m glad you’re a fan of the Revlon Ultra HD Lipsticks too. I love the two I have.

  3. Sometimes you gotta break the rules and then make your unique beauty rules! Love your bold makeup look! 🙂

  4. I have to say that you look absolutely beautiful! When mixing colors, people often tend to stay within a monochromatic or analogous theme, but, yes, opposites look soooo good together. (Listen to me with these big words – lol – I was a graphic designer for 14 years.) In regular words, I love that you mixed blues and oranges. So pretty! Your skin looks amazing with this primer/color drops mixture too. Such a great idea. 🙂

    1. Thank you so so much, Natalie! How wonderful that you’re a graphic designer! No wonder you know so much about makeup 🙂 And I love your “big words”, lol, ‘coz I often use them too (tho’ not necessary on my blog ;). I was surprised how nice the CoverFX Drops mixed with the YSL Touche Eclat Blur Primer looked. It was fairly sheer coverage but on a hot day it felt much better than BB/CC cream or even a lightweight foundation.

    1. Opposites attract, right! Thanks so much, Laura. I needed to try something a little different. I wish Jordana Cosmetics were sold worldwide ‘coz those liquid Cat Eyeliner in gorgeous jewel tones are too beautiful for words!

    1. Thank you so much! I often wear grey but I haven’t worn a bright blue liner in a long time. Next I’ll have to try the bright blues in the Venice palette, lol, or not 😉

    1. Thank you, Marcia 🙂 You really should try the CoverFX Drops with the primer. I was amazed at what a nice natural look it gave me while still providing some coverage.

  5. That is a fab look for you! I love orange and blue together. Good thing too, since wearing a royal blue shirt is pretty much the only way I feel I can wear orange lipstick without looking like a buffoon! lol

      1. I haven’t worn that shirt lately come to think of it- and I’ve been cheating on my MAC orange lipstick with Viva Glam Miley! It’s becoming hard to manage lipstick rotation since I quit wearing the stuff to work during the week. I’ve been helping a crew rework some replica Wright Bros planes and decided that lipstick might not be the best idea when I tend to work with a mouth full of pins! I don’t really want to have to explain how very small pretty coloured dots started appearing on the wings…. 😛

        1. 😀 Does the show have anything to do with David McCullough’s new book on the Wright Brothers? You have a cool job! I’m going to have to take a look at the Viva Glam Miley! – I have consciously avoided that collection but if you like it, I must see it!

          1. I like that you know about the book! I noticed that the library ordered some copies a week or so ago and thought I should check it out, but no, actually I think the timing of our re-do was pure coincidence! Sometimes I wonder if maybe I’m subconsciously going for a most unique resume. hehe

And I hadn’t planned on giving Viva Miley the time of day either but I eventually caved and ordered the original hot pink lipstick. I don’t care for her shenanigans but it’s a pretty colour and for a good cause. I decided it was kind of silly to buy a dupe shade somewhere else when I could donate to their fund. Buying a lipstick does not make Miley my new BFF, it just means we both like the same charity. I think I can manage to come to terms with that. lol
The original collaboration must have done fairly well since they had her come back for a second round of colours. I’ll have to check those out too.

          2. I happen to love David McCullough’s books. My favorite was Americans in Paris. Couldn’t put it down. He was on Charlie Rose recently talking about the Wright Bros book 🙂 I completely understand about the Miley lipstick. Definitely getting a lippie you love while giving to charity is a great thing. The Miley bit is just marketing

    1. Thank you so much, Christine! You know that’s how I was turned on to Tulip too! I have little to no interest in celebrities, but I happened to see her photos from the Oscars, was it, and I knew I had to have it 🙂
