Unwash, The New Clean Haircare Duo

I recently received two very contemporary looking hair products to try out for review. They were from Unwash whose tagline is “The New Clean”. I don’t believe that I received any explanatory materials along with them.

I looked at the bottles, and I determined that the Anti-Residue Rinse is a clarifying product. I love clarifying haircare products. I love the feeling of removing the product buildup from my hair and starting fresh. I don’t use them every time I wash my hair, since I wash my hair only every 4 or 5 days. Typically, I use a clarifying shampoo probably every 3 weeks.

Rather than creating a traditional clarifying shampoo and accompanying conditioner, Unwash broke the mold. Unwash’s objectives in developing their products were to create hair products that not only do not strip hair but also replace lost moisture. As a result, their ingredients are carefully chosen. On the Unwash website is a glossary of ingredients in the products explaining exactly what the ingredient is and does. It’s very interesting and worth a look! Their key product, Bio-Cleansing Conditioner, (that I did not try) is based on “cowashing”. Co-washing or conditioner washing is the process of using a conditioner-like cleanser to gently rid hair of dirt, excess oils, and build-up without the use of harsh detergents that can cause hair damage.

Unwash Anti-Residue Rinse

Unwash Anti-Residue Rinse is a clarifying shampoo, though Unwash doesn’t actually call it a shampoo. I was a bit confused when I first got the product because it is called a “Rinse” and I usually associate that term with a lightweight conditioner. No matter. Written on the front of the slip-proof bottle under the name are some of the product benefits that tipped me off to the fact that it is a shampoo-like product:

  • gently removes build-up
  • protects hair integrity
  • free of harsh sulfates
  • no parabens.

The rinse is a clear gel. It has a wonderful light melon scent that doesn’t remain on your hair. Unwash says to apply Anti-Residue Rinse only where you need it on your hair. Frankly, I couldn’t figure out how to put it only in certain areas so I pretty much applied it everywhere. It doesn’t lather as much as a traditional shampoo, so it’s easy to rinse out. I was concerned that my hair wouldn’t feel clean, but my hair was squeaky and felt very clean.

The Anti-Residue Rinse contains 300 ml/10 fl. oz. It’s priced at $32.

Unwash Hydrating Masque: Treatment Product

Unwash Hydrating Masque neversaydiebeauty.com @redAllison

Here’s what is said about the Hydrating Masque on the bottle:

  • creates intense moisture balance
  • replenishes lost hydration
  • smoothes & softens.

The masque is a pale butter cream color, and it has a very light fresh scent. I left on the masque for 3-4 minutes. I rinsed, and again, my hair felt clean but nicely hydrated.

The masque contains 190 ml/ 6.4 fl. oz. Priced at $34.

Result: My hair felt clean and not weighed down at all. I love starting fresh!

The Unwash haircare line also includes:

  • Bio-cleansing Conditioner, the cowashing product I mentioned above, that comes in two sizes
  • Dry Shampoo
  • a kit containing all three products: Rinse, Conditioner, Masque
  • the Unwash wide-tooth comb.

I have used the Unwash products several times since they arrived a couple of months ago.  I really think the Anti-Residue Rinse is a great clarifier. The Rinse and the Masque turned out to be nice additions to my haircare routine. I love the look of the packaging, I love the slip-proof feel of the bottles. I love that they’re sulfate-free, gluten-free and some of the products are vegan. I will definitely use these products whenever I want to clarify my hair.

Unwash is committed to supporting hair salons. Their hair products are sold at select hair salons. You can find a salon on their website, though I have seen Unwash for sale on Amazon and at Glossybox.com. To emphasize Unwash’s support of salons, a substantial portion of the purchase price goes to the salon of your choice. Very interesting approach.

Have you heard of or tried Unwash hair products yet? Have you tried cowashing? What are your thoughts on this new approach?

  1. Very interesting! My hair and scalp are so finicky, I never know what’s going to be good for one or both. I try out a lot of stuff 🙂 haha

    1. Sounds like if you find something that works, you best stick with it!

  2. Sounds like a unique and interesting product. I just purchased a new clarifying shampoo from Rusk just yesterday, but will keep these products in mind 🙂

    1. I like to have a clarifying shampoo to use about once a month even though I don’t use a lot of products in my hair. Years ago, Neutrogena convinced me it was a good thing to do, and I still do it. I love these bottles – they’re no slip and the shapes are great to hold in the shower.

  3. These sound very interesting, I have not heard of this brand. I think the Anti- Residue Rinse sounds like something I could use! I like starting fresh once in a while too.

  4. I loved the review – as per usual the content on your blog never seizes to amuse me! I also only wash my hair every four or five days so I will definitely have to check this one out! I’ll let you know how it went since my hair is a pain to brush after the shower.

    1. Do you brush your hair rather than comb it with a wide tooth comb after the shower? Thank you, Larissa, for leaving your link for What to do in Portugal! I’m headed to read it now!!

      1. I actually use a professional wooden hair brush with soft bristles( have been using it since I was 4) to untangle my hair – it is literally the only thing I can use that doesn’t hurt. This takes around 15-20 minutes, then I use a normal brush to finalise the process which also takes around 15-20 minutes. If I use a comb I’ll end up with no hair and a lot of headaches hahah.

        1. That’s unbelievable, Larissa! I think you need a better conditioner, lol. I have very thick, coarse hair, and I can always run my fingers through it completely after I shampoo and condition. But I’m assuming you must have very thick, long hair?

  5. I am a co-washer so the Bio-cleansing Conditioner sounds appealing. Would be interesting to find out how it fares compared to Wen. If you get to try it, do share your thoughts!

  6. I have a deluxe sample of their Unwash Shampoo from a box subscription that I got a while ago, and I really like it! Excellent review, Allison!

  8. That hydrating mask sounds really nice! I seem to use all the shampoos and conditioners that they say are bad for your hair but I’ve never had any problems. I love to use a clarifying shampoo about once a month or so to really get my hair clean!

    Molly and Stacie

    1. If you don’t color or chemically process your hair, you probably can use any shampoo you like! I like clarifying about once a month too. Love a fresh start!

  9. I like the idea of an anti residue shampoo that is sulfate free. I might check this one out!

  10. The Rinse sounds great! I find it hard to get a good clarifying shampoo without sulfates, so it’s going on my to find list.

    1. It is a seriously clarifying product. Worth a try!

  11. I don’t put much in my hair so I rarely need a clarifying product but the line sounds very interesting. This is a good find.

    1. When I was a teen, Neutrogena convinced me to clarify once a week (back when I washed my hair every day!) to get rid of shampoo/conditioner buildup. Who knows if I need to because I don’t use a lot of hair products either!

  12. I am OBSESSED with Unwash! I started using their products recently and I can’t get enough!

    1. Wow, that’s great to hear, Jamie! Are you doing the cowashing with the Bio-Cleansing Conditioner or are you using these two?

  13. I’ve tried co washing but my hair is so fine it stills gets weighed down.

    1. I didn’t get to try their cowashing product, Bio-Cleansing Conditioner. Frankly, though my hair isn’t fine, it never felt clean when I tried cowashing with Kerastase’s product. I’m sticking with the usual shampoo & conditioner.

  14. Interesting! Never heard of this brand before – I’m going to look into it!

  17. I need to try this! My hair is always being a PITA and I’m always trying different products to get it just right

    1. Before becoming a blogger, I think I used the same shampoo and conditioner for about a decade. Now I’ve been switching it up like crazy too

  18. I’ve never heard of this brand, but it sounds really nice!

  19. I struggle so much with shampoos and conditioners. I think I have the pickiest scalp out there, but I still like to try new products every once in a while. I’ve never heard of this brand before, but I’m interested! I agree with you, every once in a while it’s great to use a clarifying shampoo, I just have to be careful it doesn’t strip the color out of my hair!

    1. Prior to becoming a blogger, I used the same brand of shampoo and conditioner for years, maybe a decade or more. If it works, don’t try to fix it 😉

  20. I have not heard of this brand before but I like how it sounds it has worked for you. My hair is really finicky when it comes to certain products… sometimes it works, sometimes it won’t work and then a few months down the line it does… but I would try this.

    1. I only use clarifying shampoo once a month, and this one really, really cleaned my hair well which surprised me especially since it doesn’t lather much.

  21. I’m so weak to pretty packaging, and this one looks amazing 🙂

    1. This is the smartest shampoo/conditioner packaging I’ve ever seen because it doesn’t slip and it’s shaped to be held

  22. The clarifying shampoo sounds great. I don’t review many hair washing products because I am always afraid of that affecting my color (it happened once with a “natural” shampoo, never again). Thanks for the introduction to this line. I am like you, I wash every 3-5 days.

    1. I know what you mean, it can be scary to stray from a shampoo that you know works for color-treated hair. I only try out the sulfate-free shampoos, but you’re right something else could affect the color. Lucky so far!

  23. I love the sound of this brand and products! I’ve been doing the reverse wash and have been curious about co-washing (I’m still too nervous to try it though, I hate having dirty hair!)

    1. Yes, I haven’t tried cowashing yet either for the same reason. I think you have to do it for a while before it really “works” and rebalances the oil in your hair. Reverse washing didn’t work for me, but I will often apply argan or Indian oil an hour before shampooing, shampoo and end with some conditioner and that really helps my dry hair.

  24. Ohh, I am so intrigued by these! I don’t really have my ‘holy grail’ hair products yet, and always try something new whenever I run out. Thanks for the review!

    1. These are very interesting hair products. The Anti-Residue Rinse does a great job at clarifying, but it’s not an everyday kind of shampoo. The packaging is absolutely brilliant!

  25. I heard of these unshampoo method and my stylist still say its great for folks with natural hair types!

    1. That’s good to know, Ursula. The Bio-Cleansing Conditioner is Unwash’s cowashing product. I have tried it but it sounds very interesting
