Ultra Violet: Pantone Color of 2018

I know a lot of purple lovers will be rejoicing at this year’s pick for the Pantone Color of 2018: Ultra Violet, a blue-based purple.

Pantone says they have not chosen a purple with royal associations but one associated with imagination, inventiveness and creativity. It’s also associated with a mystical, spiritual quality and getting away from the troubles of the world. Eiseman, the Pantone Color Institute’s Executive Director, cited Frank Lloyd Wright, Wagner and Prince as inspirations. I get Prince, but I never thought of Wright or Wagner as being associated with purple in their works, but who knows!

As far as this color choice goes, we’ve kind of made a mess of things on this planet lately, so looking into the night sky and the next galaxy might be the way to go, lol.

This will really date me, but I remember Andy Warhol’s and Salvador Dali’s colleague and muse, the actor and artist known as Ultra Violet, Isabelle Collin Dufresne who died in 2014.

Though purple is not one of my absolute favorites, I still like the shade. Selecting Ultra Violet as the Color of 2018 has major implications for makeup in the coming year. It’s a relatively easy color for most of us to wear in eye shadow, nail polish, lipstick, and maybe even blush if you’re more adventurous. In fact, I certainly won’t need to run out and buy anything because I have a good representation of purple in my stash already. But that doesn’t mean that others won’t. In fact,on Facebook this morning, lots of women were talking about the possibility of Urban Decay coming out with an all-purple palette – makes sense to me!

So what do you think about Ultra Violet? Yea or nay?

  1. I get that purple is a very popular color and I love it in clothes, candles, crystals and jewelry but not in makeup.I couldn’t pull off a purple lip or eye without looking sickly or ridiculous, lol.I accept it now as I have tried in the past few years and it just doesn’t work for me,wah!I wish it did.So instead of pouting over my inability to wear purple makeup I will instead think about better times when Warhol was all over and we all could spot his work (and Dali’s)from a mile away and talk about it forever….good times…

    1. I agree with you about the better times, Laura! I once met a woman who was living with a guy I was going to grad school with – he had left his wife of at least a decade to move in with her. She was an acolyte of Warhol, and she used to hang out at the warehouse in the East Village. While we were visiting them (she had married an older artist who died and left her a fortune which his kids were disputing at the time), she went into the vault in the basement and brought out the most beautiful real pearls I had ever seen that Warhol had given her. Then she showed me the portrait he painted of her. What a deal! I wish I knew what happened to them. That was about 30 years ago! Back to ultra violet, I can’t wear a purple lip either. But I think I can wear eyeshadow in the shade of the swatch (rather than the background color in the video or the quote that’s much brighter) because it’s really a deep purple – it’s the kind of shade I wear sometimes in the crease or outer V instead of brown or grey. Any thoughts?

  2. OH yea, BTW Seohora has restocked their 100 point rewards with some nice treats,I snagged a Tom Ford lipstick and used my $15 off yearly reward on a palette, the UD primer I thought was a MUFE color corrector, lol and a Clean rollerball set.I should NOT be buying anything for myself right now with the holidays and gifts still needing to be bought but that $15 off and the Tom Ford lippie just got me. Have a great day and if you’re a Becca fan QVC has a great beauty steal 2 highlighter sets for one at $29.Really is a steal. Ok I’m done for today and no more coffee, lol

    1. Laura, I am going to use the $20 off $50 to buy another bottle of Shiseido Ultimune Power Concentrate Eye Serum coz that stuff is so expensive, and I am trying to decide between the Bobbi Brown Neutral Rose, a shade I was interested in I think at the store, and the Tom Ford because I don’t have anything. My luck, they’ll both be out of stock!

  3. Love this shade…but I can’t pull it off in lipsticks and eyeshadow. Wish I was not 73 because I sure would love to wear this color on my lips and eyes. I live in a very conservative area in Michigan. But I will wear this color in clothing!

    1. We can take age out of the equation, Sandy, for all of us who are young at heart! But I know what you mean about a “conservative area”. I moved back from NYC where I could wear anything I wanted, and strangers would come up to me on the street and tell me how much they liked my hair, or my clothes, or accessories, perfume, makeup shade – anything. Now here in a small town north of Boston and even in Boston itself, clothing, makeup whatever is so much more conservative. Plus nobody talks to strangers. I couldn’t wear purple makeup here. Heck, most women around here don’t even wear makeup. My fun is going to Vidal Sassoon once a month where my former NYC salon pals have transferred, and they have pink hair, 5 inch heels, false eyelashes – my real people! But back to Ultra Violet: nail polish and I can wear eyeshadow that’s the deep ultra violet shade that’s in the Pantone swatch – could you do that? But I agree with you, in clothing it’ll be great. Also, accent pieces in the home 🙂

    1. That’s great that you’re a purple lover, Helen! I hope you’ll be rocking the purple nail polish, eyes and lips on occasion throughout the year. The swatch is a lot deeper than I thought when I heard ultra violet at first. It makes a nice crease or V shade instead of brown or grey for a change even for someone like me who wears neutrals most of the time.

    1. I feel pretty much the same way. I will use some shades of purple eyeshadows on occasion, but it’s not my main shade family. I don’t even have a lot of purple nail polish. But I would love a purple velvet top or dress

  4. Give me a purple nail and I’m in heaven. I used to wear almost exclusively purples on my eyes but I am not that spring chicken anymore. Some purples are terrific but if it’s too “ultra” it’s going to be too bright for me.

    1. I love the purple nail polishes that you often show, Marcia. When I look at the ultra violet swatch, the shade itself looks deeper than I expected it to be. I’m hoping it might work as a crease or V shade in an eye look instead of brown or grey

  5. It’s like Pantone read my mind but I wish they would have let me in on it. This fall, I’d been searching for a variety of purple shades, anguishing over how few are on the market. So I bought quite a few….had they told me their secret, I could have waited until all the Pantone stuff hits the market in the next year.

    1. Oh, what a bummer! But usually a few months after Pantone launches their stuff at Sephora, it’s usually on sale so hopefully you can pick up some great ultra violet shades to add to your collection cheap!
