Switching Up My Everyday Eye Look with Brown instead of Black

I Bought This, Affiliate Links

Trying out the Super Black mascara, Charlotte Tilbury Pillow Talk Push Up Lashes Mascara (reviewed here), made me question my everyday (or truthfully, my every now and then), eye look. As I’ve mentioned a number of times, I certainly am not wearing makeup or even eye makeup every day in these COVID times, because I don’t often go anywhere. However, on days when I do leave the house other than to go for a hike in the woods, I have been trying to at least put on some eyeliner and mascara. Wearing a mask without any eye makeup makes me feel completely invisible, and putting on a little mascara helps.

But deep, dark black mascara and eye liner seems too jarring on me when wearing a mask to go to the supermarket. So I went shopping in my mascara drawer, and I came upon an unopened tube of Benefit RollerLash Mascara in brown. I decided I should try it now because even though it was unopened, the mascara wasn’t getting any “younger”.

I am a fan of Benefit’s mascaras. They are primarily lengthening mascaras with relatively easy to use wands with the plastic teeth that I favor. Roller Lash Mascara has a curved wand, that in all honesty I could do without, but that I have made work for me without too much trouble.

The brown mascara gives me a much lighter, more natural look that I think works for running errands etc. I have paired it with Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Eye Pencil in Mushroom (reviewed here) along my lower lash line, and the creamy, oh-so-easy to apply but still long-lasting Laura Geller Kaja Longwear Eyeliner in Gilded Bronze Kohl that I bought as an add-on from Ipsy a couple of months ago along my upper lash line (discussed here).

In this photo below, I am also wearing a duo chrome shadow on my lids that shifts gold to purple since on this occasion, I was going to an outdoor dinner.

I think browns are a good autumn alternative to black for me. Brown makes my blue eyes show up without being as dramatic as black.

Do you ever wear brown mascara?

  1. I love the brown palette on you! As you know, I’m a fan of brown mascara, too. Good to know about another brand in that color. I also wish they’d make a soft grey…

    1. Kim, I was going to write the same thing in the post: that I wish I could find a grey shade! I googled grey mascara, and although the brand Yves Rocher came up, there do not have a grey mascara on their website, just black, brown and blue. Maybe some day, some brand will make one

  2. I have used brown/black mascara from Maybelline’s Full and Soft for years. Also brown liner. It gives a much softer subdued look. At 71 it’s a must. 🙋🏻‍♀️🥰😷🦋🍷

    1. I remember that my mom wore a brown/black mascara from Maybelline, and I used to sneak hers back in the day. I think that’s a great shade combo that takes the edge off straight black, but I had forgotten about it. Thank you for reminding me! Have you ever come across a grey mascara in your travels? Years ago, I wore navy blue, purple, green, burgundy from a variety of brands, but I haven’t seen grey and I would like to try that shade since grey eyeliner works for me. Google says Yves Rocher for grey, but it’s not on their website.

    1. Thank you xoxo I just felt that I needed something softer to wear with a mask because black was too jarring and no makeup makes me disappear 🙁

  3. My lashes are very dark brown so a brown mascara doesn’t make them stand out. My DIL is blonde though so if I ever get my hands on a brown mascara I save it for her. I don’t love black eyeliner anymore so I stick with brown for that. You look great with the brown tones.

    1. Thank you, Marcia! That’s great that your lashes are naturally dark brown. My lashes are sand-colored and becoming almost clear – it’s been kind of alarming actually. Though I still like black mascara, the whole mask thing and the fact that so few of my inner circle friends wear any makeup these days, I’ve been feeling the need to lighten up but not become invisible. Will things ever return to what they were? I wonder
