ThinkSport SPF 50+ Mineral Based Sunscreen

Derma E generously sent me a box of sunscreens, and I was especially curious about the big tube of ThinkSport SPF 50+ Mineral Based Sunscreen. It was a new-to-me brand, and I wondered what is the relationship between ThinkSport and Derma E. The enclosed product card said that Derma E and the brand, Think, “have teamed up” to produce a number of nano-particle free, zinc-oxide based sunscreens that are safe for coral reef ecosystems. I don’t know if Derma E bought Think or if the mineral-based, reef-safe sunscreens from Derma E are produced in the Think factories, but regardless, all of the products sound great. I started with one of the products that I will introduce today, and then I will get to the rest over the next several weeks.

I spend a lot of time outdoors especially in the spring, summer and fall. Recently, I have been raking out the moss in my lawn, and it is a very time consuming job. I bought myself a rake with steel curved tines that do a wonderful job digging out the moss, but it still takes a looooooong time. I am often working in my yard for hours on end. We’re finally having some warm, almost hot, weather, so I have been wearing short sleeves and shorts for the first time this season. So I need to apply more sunscreen to my arms and legs, not just my face.

ThinkSport SPF 50+ Sunscreen jumped out at me in the box of sunscreens because it is supposed to be for athletes (which I take to mean anyone who works or exercises outdoors and works up a sweat – in other words, those who need a sunscreen that won’t come off in the water or with perspiration.) Also, the zinc-oxide mineral-based formula appealed to me because I am applying a lot of it, all over.

ThinkSport is a cruelty-free, reef-safe formula created by the scientists and physicians at ThinkSport and ThinkBaby (products for babies and kids), a company founded by Kevin Brodwick, a biotech guy who cares about health and preventive medicine and set out to create safer personal care products. One of the first products that his company redesigned was a baby bottle with safer materials because 95% of the baby bottles on the market contained Bisphenol A (BPA), a chemical suspected to disrupt the endocrine system. From there, ThinkSport introduced a sports bottle fabricated without BPA. In fact, they gave me one!

It’s a terrific insulated bottle that keeps hot beverages hot for 4+ hours and cold beverages cold for 18+ hours. It also has a great handle. Though it’s a little too tall to fit in the bottle holder on my bike, it’s perfect for hiking, the beach, or keeping with me while gardening to encourage me to drink more water.

Back to ThinkSport SPF 50+ Sunscreen. The sunscreen itself is a rather thick white cream with a light, sweet/fresh scent. The scent does linger awhile, but I really have to stick my nose in it to smell it. When I first spread the white cream, it does leave a white cast that helps you know where you’ve applied it. But when I rub it in, the white disappears completely. The cream is not greasy. In fact, after rubbing it in, it leaves my skin feeling silky. Very nice!

I like ThinkSport SPF 50+ Mineral Sunscreen! This is a good one. The tube I have contains 3 fl. oz. It’s sold at Target for $12.79, on the ThinkSport website, at iHerb.com, and at REI. There’s also a 6 fl. oz. tube that’s even more cost effective. The kids’ products are sold on the Think website as well as at CVS and Bed Bath & Beyond. The sports bottles come in three sizes: 12, 17 and 20 ounces and are sold on the Think website and, I bet also at REI. On the Think website, type in the code TY25 right now for a 25% discount. Check out this brand if you haven’t already. I think you’ll like it a lot!

  1. Sounds like a good product. Silly story here but I didn’t have my glasses on due to my mask and I bought a bottle of spray sunscreen. Imagine my shock when I realized it was “glow” and clearly stated on the label. I gave it to my great niece who is 7 with the promise that she would ask her Mother before using. By the way I found out it glowed when I sprayed it on my face AFTER I had finished my makeup!

    1. Oh, Sandy, how funny! I can certainly relate. If I squint a little, I can read close, but the type on most spray can and squeeze tubes is so small that unless I have my readers on, I can’t read it at all either. I hope your great niece enjoys the glow!!

    1. This box full of sunscreen and the fab insulated water bottle from Derma E and ThinkSport were such a nice surprise! Glad you got them too!

  2. I got a tube of Elta MD and one of Neutrogena sent to me, so I’m well-protected for awhile. After they’re gone, I’ll check out this!

    1. I am dying to hear about the Elta MD sunscreen. I have been wanting to try Elta MD for quite a while but I have so many I need to use up.

      1. I got the tinted version, which is slightly too warm a color for me, but it feels great on and absorbs well. Thumbs up from me.

  3. This confused me ” raking out the moss in my lawn ”

I have never heard of anyone doing this. Heck I have never saw it grown in grass. On rocks, sidewalks etc but never grass. Maybe it is something it just does in your part of the country 🙂

    1. Gloria, moss grows in lawns that are struggling, e.g. compacted soil, poor drainage, low soil pH, or not enough sunlight. My soil is compacted, but the key reason is not enough sunlight. In 20 years, my full sun backyard is now partly sun because the oaks, beeches, pine, and hemlock trees in my backyard have grown so tall. Raking out the moss and trying to aerate the soil (I paid to have it aerated in the fall but I am thinking I might be better off doing it in the spring) and loosen up the soil as well as putting down more soil and grass seed may help.

      1. It makes more sense now knowing you have all that shade. You could always give up the grass (no mowing required) and just have a yard of green moss. 🙂

I understand they have grass seed now that is made for shade yards. But don’t know if that would stop the moss. Garden should be able to answer that question

        1. Gloria, I need to switch the company that applies chemicals to my lawn. I am embarrassed to say that I use Trugreen, and I know that their chemicals are bad for the environment (though even Trugreen has an organic program that I should ask about). I rake and mow my lawn, I apply lime, and I do use shade grass seed. I have the lawn aerated in the fall to help with compacting, but I am thinking I need to switch to aerating in the spring instead. I need to interview some local lawn care folks and see if I can afford their programs. I know some people don’t mind moss in their lawn, but unfortunately, I hate it.

          1. WOW sounds like all of that would be expensive. I don’t your know your area but down south they top their trees for many reasons. They worry when they get to tall about storms and trees coming down. And my aunt did hers because she wanted sun for her garden and flowers. Have you thought about doing that?

          2. I live in the woods, Gloria! I couldn’t afford to do the forest, lol. And yes, lots of trees have come down or large limbs have fallen. So far, I have been lucky 😉

  4. Sounds like the perfect sunscreen for you since you are so active. My legs are covered all the time but my arms need this kind of coverage.

    1. I am covered with dark spots, Marcia. It’s awful. When I was young, I used baby oil or nothing in spite of my mother’s warnings. I should stay indoors, lol, but that’s not going to happen.

    1. I spend a lot of time outdoors in the sun, so ThinkSport SPF 50 is perfect for me at this time of year. I hope you like it for your outdoor days
