Happy Independence Day!

Happy Independence Day to the American readers of Never Say Die Beauty!

Hope you enjoy the holiday with fireworks, barbecues, picnics, beach, boating, camping, baseball games, and all those things that Americans do for fun in the summer.

Unfortunately, due to the threat of a rainstorm, the fireworks that we usually go to in Gloucester were cancelled last night. Of course, it turned out to be a lovely, warm, rain-free night at the time the fireworks were set to go off. Isn’t that always the way?

While you’re enjoying your celebrations, give some thought to the Founding Fathers and Mothers and the Declaration of Independence. In fact, here’s a link to a fascinating article in The New York Times about an errant period after the word “happiness” in an 1823 engraving of the Declaration that does not appear in the original draft from 1776. Scholars (or at least one scholar) argue that the period, or lack thereof in the original, changes the meaning of “life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness…”.

And thank you, France, for the great gift of the Statue of Liberty!

I feel bad that I didn’t wish the Canadian readers a Happy Canada Day, just a couple of days ago. I hope you enjoyed your day too, had a good time celebrating, and thought about all the wonderful things that Canada stands for!
