Kiehl’s Dynamic Duo: Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask and Midnight Recovery Serum

When it comes to facial masks, I can’t get enough. I have so many it’s ridiculous. All different types. All different benefits.

But I only get a professional facial maybe once or twice a year, so I try to do the best I can to take care of my skin at home. I’d like to bring your attention to a terrific new mask from Kiehls, and one of their serums that makes the mask even more exceptional.

Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask

Kiehls has added several new face masks to their mask range. The four that I’ve seen on their website and advertised on Facebook most recently come in translucent brightly colored jars and are a mix of overnight and rinse-off masks. I received Kiehls Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask, an overnight mask in a raspberry colored jar.

Firming masks are my jam, so this velvety rich, light pink mask is perfect for me. It has a bouncy gel-cream texture, and it’s not heavy on my skin.

On their website, Kiehls reminds us that the hisbiscus flower closes up at night to protect its precious nectar. As an ingredient, hibiscus hydrates and firms. Ginger leaf is added to the formula to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. The mask provides overnight firming as well as longer term firming benefits while it moisturizes.

The mask is recommended for use every night, and to tell you the truth, I’ve gotten hooked. I’m supposed to be testing another moisturizer, and I can’t make myself stop using this one.

Though rich, Kiehls Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask is perfect to wear overnight. It’s not greasy, it absorbs well, and it doesn’t stain my pillow though I sleep on my stomach or side. In fact, it seems more like a moisturizer than a heavy mask. In the morning, I just rinse it off. My skin feels smooth and hydrated, and it has a nice glow.

Because I have a friend who is sensitive to scents, I try to remember to mention fragrance. As you might see in the long ingredient list below, one of the ingredients at the end of the list is Rosa Damascena extract, and that gives the mask a light rose scent. Although I love rose scent, I don’t smell it when it’s on my skin.

Kiehls Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask contains 3.4 fl. oz. and is priced at $54.

I really love this overnight mask! I wondered how others felt about it, so I read through all the customer comments and reviews on the Kiehls website. We all feel the same way about Kiehls Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask. Check ’em out. It’s a home run!

Midnight Recovery Concentrate

I discovered Midnight Recovery Concentrate via a travel size mini-bottle that I got in my Barney’s beauty bag a while ago. It was love at first use!

Kiehls Midnight Recovery Concentrate, neversaydiebeauty.com

Midnight Recovery Concentrate is a lightweight nighttime facial oil with a light herbal scent. The 1.0 fl. oz. dark blue glass bottle that I have now contains a dosing dropper. But about three drops is all that it takes to cover my face. I press the oil onto my clean face, and it gets absorbed almost immediately without leaving a greasy feeling on my skin.

The serum contains three key ingredients:

  • evening primrose oil: essential fatty acids from the seeds of the evening primrose plant repair the skin’s barrier while maintaining elasticity and hydration
  • lavender oil: soothes irritation and inflammation to even skin tone; a calming oil that brightens skin
  • squalene: derived from olives, squalene is a lipid that replenishes the skin’s barrier.

Midnight Recovery Concentrate truly does work overnight to help skin heal itself by strengthening its barrier and providing protection against environmental stressors. Just applying it to the skin makes it feel better instantly. It gives skin a velvety feeling as it drinks up the essential oils and botanicals.

Coupling Midnight Recovery Concentrate with Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask creates the dynamic duo. I press a few drops of Midnight Recovery Concentrate into my cleansed skin, and then follow up with a layer of creamy pink Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask. The next morning, my skin feels fabulous: hydrated, firmer, plump. I know I can’t turn the clock back, but this combo sure helps!

Midnight Recovery Concentrate comes in three sizes: 1 fl. oz. $46, 1.7 fl. oz. $73, and 3.4 fl. oz. $123. You should read the customer reviews for this delightful serum: 5 star average rating with 673 people singing its praises. Wow.

Ingredients: CAPRYLIC/CAPRIC TRIGLYCERIDE, DICAPRYLYL CARBONATE, SQUALANE, ROSA CANINA FRUIT OIL, OENOTHERA BIENNIS OIL/EVENING PRIMROSE OIL, SIMMONDSIA CHINENSIS OI/ JOJOBA SEED OIL, CORIANDRUM SATIVUM OIL/CORIANDER SEED OIL, TOCOPHEROL, LAVANDULA ANGUSTIFOLIA OIL/LAVENDER OIL, PELARGONIUM GRAVEOLENS FLOWER OIL, LINALOOL, ROSMARINUS OFFICINALIS LEAF OIL/ROSEMARY LEAF OIL, CITRONELLOL, GERANIOL, LAVANDULA HYBRIDA OIL
CUCUMIS SATIVUS EXTRACT/CUCUMBER FRUIT EXTRACT, CURCUMA LONGA EXTRACT/TURMERIC ROOT EXTRACT, LIMONENE, CITRAL, SCLAREOLIDE, ROSA SPP/ROSE FLOWER OIL, JASMINUM OFFICINALE EXTRACT/JASMINE EXTRACT, HELIANTHUS ANNUUS SEED OIL/SUNFLOWER SEED OIL

My suggestion is try these two skincare products in tandem if you can. If not, put them both on your wish list. Sephora’s VIB event is coming up soon. They’re worth it!

    Thanks Allison.

I’ve been wanting to purchase this ever since I laid eyes on it. An this was one of the most detailed (and useful) reviews I could find online for this mask. You did reply to one of the comments that it’s a delight for dry skin. I’ve really sensitive PCOS skin, and bounces between oily to combination. Do you suppose this may be too oily for me?

Have you by any chance sampled the Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Mask? I know I need an overnight mask for all the damage the harsh weather in Dubai does to me. 🙁

    1. Hi Diana, thank you for your wonderful comment about my review. I appreciate it! I’m sorry that you are suffering from PCOS. One of the bloggers that I follow, simplystine.com also has PCOS and she writes about it from time to time. I have not tried Kiehl’s Turmeric & Cranberry Seed Mask, unfortunately. I love the Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask, but it is primarily an anti-aging sleeping mask to help with dry skin and wrinkles. Perhaps adding a hyaluronic acid serum to your routine to help your skin hold onto moisture might be worthwhile. I have several, but Korean brand IUNIK has a hyaluronic acid essence that is 45% HA, and it is affordably priced. It’s my go-to. Also, take a look at the video from a young woman who has PCOS who is using a nighttime skincare routine with Kiehl’s products https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3rBocOFXmV4 I use the Midnight Recovery Serum Concentrate also, and it is truly amazing. I’m not sure I would have thought about it immediately for those with acne, but she is having great results with it, and she discussed it with the folks at Kiehls. Let me know what you think.
